On November 1, 2024, the two-week-long search for Tony Bortner, a 51-year-old fire police captain with Laurel Fire Company No. 1, Windsor, York County, Pennsylvania, came to an end. His body was found in shallow waters off Peavine Island, in the Martic Township area of the Susquehanna River. The discovery was confirmed by the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office around 2:54 p.m.

Bortner had been unaccounted for since October 17. His vehicle was found two days later at the historic Lock 12 area in Lower Chanceford Township, York County. According to authorities, his family said that Bortner frequently visited this place when he needed some solace.

Since his disappearance, search teams meticulously covered a four-square-mile area before finding Bortner. The Lancaster County Coroner declared him dead at the scene, and his body was moved to the Lancaster County Forensic Center for further examination.

An updated report from the coroner’s office, released on Monday, November 4, stated that Bortner died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, ruling the death a suicide.

Bortner had been a member of the fire company since 2006, dedicating nearly 18 years of service. He started his career as a fire police officer, was promoted to lieutenant, and finally held the position of fire police captain.

Throughout his tenure, Bortner was recognized for his commitment to the fire company’s operations. The fire company, in their public statement, mentioned his willingness to contribute in various areas, including fundraising events, station duties, and other required tasks.

Bortner’s wife, Brenda Bortner,  shared a heartfelt message on her Facebook page, expressing her love for her husband and labeling him her “forever hero.” She said, “He loved us very much. He did everything to protect us and serve us and the community. He would help anybody. All you had to do was ask him, and he was there. That’s how everybody remembers him; that’s how I remember him.”

The Laurel Fire Company announced the tragic news on Facebook, expressing their grief over the loss of not just a member, but a dear friend. They spoke of the void his absence would leave at the firehouse. Bortner had been serving with them since November 2006, starting as a Fire Police Officer, then becoming a Lieutenant, and finally, a Fire Police Captain.
