MSNBC is confronting internal unrest following revelations that Rev. Al Sharpton’s nonprofit, the National Action Network (NAN), received $500,000 from Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign shortly before a favorable interview aired on the network. The disclosure has raised concerns about journalistic integrity among MSNBC staff.
Federal Election Commission records indicate that the Harris campaign donated $250,000 to NAN on September 5 and again on October 1, 2024. Subsequently, on October 20, Harris participated in an interview with Sharpton on his MSNBC program, “PoliticsNation.” During the interview, Sharpton praised Harris, drawing comparisons between her and Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress and a 1972 presidential candidate. Sharpton did not disclose the campaign donations during the broadcast.
An MSNBC spokesperson stated that the network was “unaware of the donations made to the National Action Network.”
This lack of disclosure has unsettled some MSNBC employees. One staff member said the situation “feels like a bridge too far” and likened it to a “pay-to-play” scenario.
The controversy has ignited discussions within the network about ethical standards and transparency. The same MSNBC employee questioned, “How does this (expletive ) happen?… I think a three-year-old would see a potential conflict in this.”
Despite the internal concerns, Sharpton continues hosting his weekend show and regularly appearing on MSNBC. The network has not announced any disciplinary actions against him.
Sharpton’s role within MSNBC is widely acknowledged as unconventional, as his reputation extends beyond journalism to political and social activism. Staff members noted that he operates under different rules from others at the network but insisted that such donations should not be allowed to influence programming.
Given the network’s history of leniency in such matters, there is little expectation that Sharpton will face consequences for this incident. However, the situation has reignited discussions about journalistic integrity and the standards to which all employees should be held, with staff emphasizing that donations of this magnitude create a serious conflict of interest. MSNBC has yet to provide an official response to the controversy.
The Harris campaign’s contributions to NAN were part of a broader strategy to engage minority voters, with $5.4 million distributed to various Black and Latino advocacy groups.
