A mass shooting near a funeral home in Towson, Maryland on Tuesday evening, December 17, 2024, claimed the life of one individual and injured nine others. Police responding to the incident also found a burning vehicle at the scene.
The Baltimore County Police Department received several reports of shots fired around 7:15 p.m. near Johnson Funeral Home, on the 8500 block of Loch Raven Boulevard. Upon reaching the scene, officers discovered a vehicle tipped over and ablaze, as reported by Police Chief Robert McCullough of Baltimore County.
Most of the victims endured gunshot wounds, with one individual already dead when the authorities arrived. The deceased was identified as Charles Graham Jr., 26. Nine others, who survived the shooting, were transported to local trauma centers by emergency services. The exact nature and extent of their injuries remain undisclosed. The victims were between the ages of 14 and 27, and most were teenagers.
According to McCullough, the incident seemed to be a “rolling-type gunshot” situation involving one or more vehicles. “It appears that the individuals in this case somehow knew one another,” he stated.
Investigators are treating the incident as an isolated, targeted act, posing no ongoing threat to the public, as per McCullough. It is yet to be clarified whether any suspects have been apprehended, and no details about a possible motive have been revealed.
“We will leave no stone unturned, and we will dedicate every resource to this,” McCullough reassured. “We don’t generally see incidents like this in our community in Baltimore County. I assure you, as your police chief, that we will put all resources toward trying to clear this case.”
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is assisting with the investigation. Authorities are attempting to establish the events leading up to both the shooting and the vehicle overturn.
Baltimore County Fire Chief Joe Dixon reported that the fire department managed to put out the vehicle fire and offered immediate medical aid to victims before their transportation. Dixon praised the teamwork between the fire and police departments, stating, “I was proud of our responders.”
Johnny Olszewski, the County Executive and Representative-elect for Maryland’s 2nd Congressional District expressed his shock at the violent incident. “This is an incident that is shocking, particularly for those of us in Baltimore County,” he said.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact Metro Crime Stoppers of Maryland at 1-866-756-2587. Informants can remain anonymous, and any information leading to an arrest could qualify for a cash reward of up to $2,000.
