On November 21, 2024, 24-year-old Antonio Pascual Mateo was fatally electrocuted while installing Christmas lights at a client’s house in the vicinity of Idaho Avenue and Skyline Drive, Escondido, California. The unfortunate incident occurred when Mateo accidentally tossed a string of lights over a high-voltage power line. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office disclosed that Mateo was discovered, electrocuted, hanging upside-down in a tree, held up by his waist harness.
Responders had to wait for San Diego Gas & Electric to power shut down before they could safely retrieve him. Despite the best efforts of advanced cardiovascular life support, Antonio Mateo was declared dead at Palomar Medical Center.
San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) released a statement on Tuesday afternoon, expressing profound regret over the tragic incident. The company underscored its commitment to prioritize the safety of its customers and the general public. SDG&E extended its deepest sympathy to Mateo’s family and close friends, recognizing the immense difficulties they are facing during this tough time. The company refrained from divulging further details about the accident, citing ongoing investigations and respect for the grieving family.
Mateo, originally from Guatemala, was highly regarded for his commitment to his family. A GoFundMe page, created to aid with funeral costs and the repatriation of his remains, depicted him as “a brother, a son, and an uncle” who “always took care of his mother and family.” The campaign has so far collected over $16,000, nearing its goal of $20,000.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, approximately 160 injuries related to holiday decorations occur each day during the festive season, with almost half of them involving falls. Electrical injuries and fires are also a significant concern. The commission advises not to connect more than three incandescent light strands and to avoid overloading electrical outlets. Reports suggest exercising caution while decorating, especially near power lines or when using electrical decorations.
Jay Hobson, owner of The Holiday Lighters, advised about the importance of safety during the installation of holiday decorations, saying, “Organize your stuff. Taking your time is the best.”
