Mark Withers, a respected actor known for his work in “Dynasty” and “Stranger Things,” died on November 22, 2024. His death, at 77, was a result of pancreatic cancer, as confirmed by his daughter Jessie Withers. She lauded her father’s fortitude during his illness and praised his legacy of talent, kindness, and dedication to his craft.

Born in Binghamton, New York on June 25, 1947, Withers received a Bachelor of Arts in acting and directing from California State University, Los Angeles, and a Master of Fine Arts from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Withers’ acting career began in the late 70s, with roles in commercials for brands such as McDonald’s, Folger’s Coffee, Irish Spring, and American Airlines. His breakthrough role came in 1981 as Ted Dinard in “Dynasty,” a significant portrayal of an LGBTQ+ character in a major American television drama. Throughout his forty-year career, Withers demonstrated his adaptability in a variety of television series such as “Wonder Woman,” “Magnum, P.I.,” “The Dukes of Hazzard,” “Dallas,” “L.A. Law,” “Matlock,” “Frasier,” “Criminal Minds,” “True Blood,” “Sense8,” and “Castle.” He gained prominence in the 80s and 90s with his performances in both recurring and guest roles across different genres. Withers’ role as Gary, the coroner in Netflix’s “Stranger Things” in 2016, introduced him to younger viewers.

Besides television, Withers also had roles in films such as “Basic Training,” “The Ultimate Life,” “Turn Around Jake,” and “Bolden.” Colleagues recalled Withers as a professional dedicated to his craft, bringing depth and humanity to every role. Off stage, he was a mentor to aspiring actors and frequently participated in workshops and charity events advocating for the arts.

Withers is survived by his wife, Haiyan Liu Withers, and daughter Jessie. The family has requested donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in his memory. In a statement, the family lauded the support they’ve received and emphasized that Withers’ influence on the industry and those who knew him will continue to be felt in the years to come.
