Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, 84, was operated on at a US military hospital in Germany after an accident during a visit for the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. Pelosi was participating in a bipartisan congressional delegation in Luxembourg to acknowledge the contributions of U.S. servicemembers in World War II.
Pelosi’s spokesperson, Ian Krager confirmed that “Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi sustained an injury during an official engagement and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation. She is receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals.” Subsequent to the evaluation in Luxembourg, Pelosi was medevaced to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, according to a defense official. The medical center is a major military hospital that treats US troops injured in combat. It was confirmed on Saturday that Pelosi underwent hip replacement surgery after fracturing her hip.
The accident happened on Friday when Pelosi fell down marble stairs at the Grand Ducal Palace. She was seen earlier walking with Representative Michael McCaul. The full extent of her injuries, apart from the fractured hip, has not been revealed. Consequently, Pelosi has canceled the remainder of her scheduled events in Luxembourg and Bastogne. She expressed regret for missing the ceremonies and gratitude to the people of Luxembourg and Bastogne for their role in the war and their peacekeeping efforts in Europe.
During the visit, Pelosi was honoring the bravery of American troops during one of the most critical battles of World War II. Krager noted that Pelosi was deeply moved by the stories of courage and sacrifice shared during the ceremonies and remains committed to preserving and honoring their legacy.
The incident involving Pelosi echoes a recent one with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, 82, who also sustained minor injuries after a fall at the U.S. Capitol. These incidents have reignited discussions about the physical strain on senior politicians.
Pelosi, a long-time representative from San Francisco, California, stepped down as Speaker in 2023 after the Republicans gained control of the House but retained her seat, winning a resounding victory in her district. Her lengthy career boasts significant legislative accomplishments such as the Affordable Care Act and pandemic relief bills. She continues to be a significant influence in U.S. politics, recognized for her commitment and service.
