Kate Middleton and Prince William Spark Fan Chatter

The Prince and Princess of Wales have begun preparations to exercise a significant new royal power – the granting of royal warrants. This centuries-old tradition, first established in the 15th century, can have a substantial effect on a company’s reputation and market standing.

Acting as an official mark of the monarchy’s endorsement, royal warrants are given to companies that provide goods or services to the royal household. These prestigious titles, valid for up to five years, enable the holder to display the royal coat of arms on their packaging, advertisements, and stationery.

Prior to the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, the power to issue royal warrants was held exclusively by the Queen, Prince Philip, and then Prince Charles. Since assuming the throne, King Charles and Queen Camilla have started awarding their own warrants, with the first recipients including Jo Hansford, Camilla’s hairdresser, and champagne producer Bollinger.

According to the Royal Warrant Holders Association, approximately 800 companies currently hold warrants. The organization states that these holders span from traditional artisans to multinational corporations, covering industries from vintners to computer software enterprises.

Public conjecture about potential recipients has largely centered on the fashion labels favored by Kate. Social media discussions have highlighted Alexander McQueen and Jenny Packham as possible choices due to their history of crafting signature pieces for the Princess. One fan on X suggested, “Maybe Cadbury will get one from him. Louis was seen with a Cadbury selection box recently, so we know the Waleses are fans.”

This development signifies another evolution in the couple’s expanding royal duties. William and Kate received their current titles after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, leading to William taking on more responsibilities in support of King Charles. The past year has brought considerable challenges, with William increasing his royal engagements while Kate paused public duties for cancer treatment.

The announcement of the royal warrants aligns with the family’s return to their regular routine after a lengthy Christmas vacation at Anmer Hall, their country home in Norfolk. The family is now back at Adelaide Cottage in Windsor, as their three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis – started school at Lambrook School on January 8. Kate celebrated her 43rd birthday on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at their Windsor home.

King Charles and Queen Camilla underscored the importance of royal warrants last month by issuing their own set of these esteemed designations. Companies that receive these royal warrants are expected to uphold the highest standards of service, quality, and excellence in their interactions with the royal household. The warrant allows businesses to add “By Appointment to HM The King” or similar wording to their products and promotional materials.

Companies that currently hold royal warrants have reported significant advantages for their businesses. Historically, the warrants have enhanced domestic sales and export opportunities, particularly in markets that closely follow the British Royal Family. The power to issue these warrants offers the Prince and Princess of Wales a direct way to influence British business and commerce.
