Discovery Channel’s “Moonshiners” star, Everett Kenneth “Kenny” Law, passed away on January 14, 2025. Law, a third-generation distiller from Virginia, died at a local hospital in Rocky Mount, Virginia at the age of 68.
Law’s Choice Distillery, which Kenny Law co-owned with his cousin Henry Law, publicly announced his death on social media. The announcement said that Law passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones.
In recent years, Law’s health had been deteriorating. His cousin Henry disclosed that Kenny had a heart attack in 2024, was hospitalized due to a blood infection, and was battling diabetes in his last years.
The Law family has a rich distilling history dating back several generations. Kenny and Henry were grandsons of Owen Law, and were taught by Kenny’s father, Amos Law, who was a renowned moonshiner in the region. The cousins later transitioned to legal distilling through their Law’s Choice Distillery in Franklin County, Virginia, producing up to 47,000 gallons of moonshine yearly.
Kenny Law joined the cast of “Moonshiners” in its eighth season. The show, first aired in 2011, follows Appalachian residents as they carry on their family traditions of moonshine production.
In 1977, Law’s moonshining career almost came to an abrupt end after a propane explosion caused a fire at an indoor distilling site. Despite being severely burnt, Law rescued his father from the burning structure and fully recovered from his injuries.
Law’s entrepreneurial skills led him to establish Law’s Roofing Company in the 1980s. He successfully ran the business for two decades while still upholding his family’s distilling tradition. During the 1990s, he dedicated his resources to his community, volunteering time and materials to install roofs for Habitat for Humanity homes in Rocky Mount, Virginia.
Law was known for his vibrant personality and enjoyed interacting with fans of the show. In his obituary, he was described as “a true outlaw – rebellious, fun-loving, charming, and tough as nails, yet soft-hearted toward those he loved.” His favorite pastime was “picking” antiques, which he would restore and resell.
The “Moonshiners” social media account from Discovery Channel expressed their sorrow at Law’s passing: “We’re deeply saddened about Kenny Law’s passing. He was a treasured member of our Moonshiners community since season eight. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. Shine on, Kenny.”
Co-star Amanda Bryant paid tribute to Law on social media: “Last Night We Lost a True Legend, Kenny Law from our Moonshiner Family. You will be dearly missed, it was an Honor to know you and call you my friend. Prayers for the whole Law family at this time. They are dear friends of mine and my heart breaks for each of them.”
Law is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kenzie and Nathan Wright; grandsons, Atlas and Fox Wright; brothers, David Law and Ronnie (Suzanne) Law; and cousin, Henry Lee Law.
