In his new cover story for the April issue of GQ, Ben Affleck addressed his divorce from Jennifer Lopez, offering limited insight into the end of their relationship while pushing back on speculation about dramatic causes.
Affleck said there was no scandal or intrigue behind the split, describing it as free of “soap opera” elements.
The 52-year-old actor spoke about his appearance in Lopez’s documentary “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” where he appeared uneasy with how openly Lopez shared details of their relationship. He explained that his involvement stemmed from a desire to be honest and to participate in a way he considered “interesting” and authentic.
Affleck noted key differences in how he and Lopez, 55, handle fame and public scrutiny. He described himself as more private than his former spouse and commended Lopez for navigating celebrity life more skillfully than he has. He acknowledged that his own temperament leans toward being “more reserved.”
He clarified, however, that these personality differences were not the root cause of their separation. Referring to a metaphor from the documentary, he said people must accept each other’s nature when entering a relationship, likening it to not marrying a ship captain and then disliking “going out in the water.” He emphasized that partners need to accept what they knew going into the relationship.
Affleck reiterated that their differing views on privacy did not cause any major “fracture.” He advised against drawing conclusions from the documentary, saying it wouldn’t provide clear insight into their personal issues.
He pushed back against the idea that high-profile breakups always involve dramatic reasons, describing their split instead as a relatable process—“people trying to figure out their lives and relationships.”
Affleck expressed reluctance to discuss the specific reasons behind their divorce. He said doing so would involve attributing personal “issues” to one another, something he found uncomfortable and vulnerable to share.
In a follow-up conversation with GQ, Affleck stressed that he held no resentment toward Lopez. He said he was comfortable discussing personal topics as long as his true feelings and intentions were accurately conveyed. He wanted to ensure nothing he shared would imply “negativity or judgment,” stating that he has “nothing but respect” for Lopez.
Affleck and Lopez finalized their divorce in January 2025, after Lopez filed in August 2024. They had been married for two years following a 2021 reconciliation, nearly two decades after their original engagement ended in 2003.
Lopez also addressed the divorce publicly in an Interview Magazine article in October 2024. She described the breakup as painful, saying it nearly overwhelmed her, but also acknowledged that it was ultimately something she needed. She said that, in hindsight, she viewed the experience as necessary and thanked a higher power for the outcome.
She also expressed contentment about being single, noting she was not looking for a new partner and was focused on what she could achieve “flying on my own.”
As Lopez continues independently, Affleck remains focused on co-parenting his three children with his first ex-wife, Jennifer Garner. He described Garner as a strong co-parent and partner in raising their children, calling her “wonderful” and highlighting how well they work together.
