The entertainment community is grieving the death of Chantel Bellew, a former contestant on “Britain’s Got Talent” (BGT), who died at 34. Bellew, known for her dancing talent and teaching “Strictly Come Dancing” judge Anton Du Beke tap dancing, passed away in a hospital from a suspected overdose after a prolonged struggle with depression.
Bellew participated in BGT Series 13 in 2019, reaching the quarter-finals with a notable military-themed dance routine. The performance concluded with a dramatic costume change, revealing a patriotic-themed bodice, which amused hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly. Despite not advancing to the semi-finals, Bellew’s friends say she valued her time on the ITV talent show.
On social media, the performer shared her BGT experience and posted a video teaching Anton Du Beke some tap dance moves, captioning it: “Great day teaching Anton some tap.” Her career included roles in numerous musicals, including the Paris production of 42nd Street and the UK tour of The Greatest Showman.
Stephen Mear, director of 42nd Street, remembered Bellew as a warm person with exceptional tap dancing skills, leaving a lasting impression on those she worked with. Her talent and personality were significant to both her professional and personal circles.
In recent years, Bellew, who lived in Widnes, Cheshire, had been a dance and singing teacher. However, she left that career to work in a supermarket as her mental health worsened. Her mother, Jill, spoke about her daughter’s challenges, particularly during the COVID-19 lockdown, which disrupted her career.
Katy Glover, Bellew’s friend and fellow performer, paid tribute, noting Bellew’s energy, sociability, and passion for performance arts. Glover emphasized her special connection to the world of glamour and entertainment.
Glover mentioned Bellew’s fond memories of BGT, which she approached with professional dedication. She highlighted Bellew’s exceptional tap dancing skills, calling her an unparalleled talent with a vibrant personality.
Bellew’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to cover her funeral expenses, aiming to provide a “showbiz farewell she deserves.” The fundraiser initially targeted £8,000 (approximately $10,240) and had raised over £9,515 (over $12,000) at the time of reporting.
The fundraiser’s organizers stated that all funds would be given to Bellew’s parents, Jill Dawson and Paul Bellew, to cover funeral costs and related expenses. Any remaining funds will be donated to Mind, a mental health charity.
The fundraising page highlights community efforts to honor Bellew’s memory, noting the significance of people coming together for a common cause. Friends expressed the desire to help the family provide a farewell that honors her showbiz spirit.
The statement continues with an appeal for support, explaining that funeral costs are substantial and requesting donations to help cover these expenses during this challenging time.
Bellew’s mother, Jill, has used this time to advocate for mental health awareness, urging those experiencing depression to seek help. She noted that her daughter’s experience demonstrates that mental health issues can affect anyone, including those with success in their field.
The dance community has rallied around Bellew’s memory, with colleagues and friends sharing memories of her talent and personality. Her passing highlights the struggles that can exist behind the entertainment industry’s glamour, and her family hopes supporting the Mind charity will help others facing similar challenges.
