What started as a dispute between two groups inside a Walmart escalated into gunfire, resulting in injuries to two individuals and lockdowns at nearby schools.
The incident took place at about 2:34 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, in the automotive section of the Walmart on Highway 9 Bypass West in Lancaster, South Carolina. Authorities noted that the event may have originated from a conflict between rival groups with gang affiliations.
Lancaster Police Chief Don Roper provided an update during a Thursday press conference, sharing new insights into the investigation.
“I want to express my gratitude to all the agencies that have stepped up to assist us and provide resources during this very complex investigation. Their prompt response and teamwork have been essential in safeguarding our community,” Roper stated.
As of Thursday morning, three suspects have been arrested in relation to the shooting. Lareakus Antonio Cunningham Jr., 18, and Na’Rickio LaQuan Mickle, 19, were apprehended shortly after the incident. They face charges of attempted murder, breach of peace, and weapon possession during a violent crime.
Zydarius Stover, a third suspect, faces charges for failure to report a crime, according to police statements.
Authorities confirmed that Jayvion Wells, a fourth suspect, is under police supervision at a hospital, receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the shootout. Officials stated he will be arrested upon his release.
As of April 4, 2025, another suspect, Antonio Hayden, has surrendered to the police. A juvenile suspect remains unidentified and at large, with the 6th Circuit Solicitor seeking to charge the juvenile as an adult due to the crime’s severity.
Investigators have identified the “main players” involved and are continuing efforts to apprehend the remaining suspect.
The incident led to precautionary lockdowns at several Lancaster County schools, including North Elementary School, Lancaster High School, the Lancaster County School District Career Center, and the Lancaster Bus Office. Parents of students at Andrew Jackson High, Buford High, and Indian Land High were also alerted around 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile stressed the gravity of the situation during the Thursday press conference, noting that law enforcement would ensure the individuals responsible face appropriate consequences.
The Walmart store remained closed for over 24 hours following the shooting to enable investigators to process the scene. It has since reopened, though concerns about safety remain among shoppers.
No Walmart employees or customers were injured in the gunfire, which was confined to the individuals involved in the altercation, authorities confirmed.
Multiple law enforcement agencies are part of the investigation, including the Lancaster Police Department, Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, the Multijurisdictional Violent Crimes Task Force, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
Walmart officials issued a statement on the incident, stating, “Violence like this is unacceptable. We appreciate police and first responders for acting quickly. We’re cooperating with law enforcement during their investigation.”
Investigators emphasized that this was not a random act of violence, as the individuals involved were acquainted. The exact motive for the confrontation is still under investigation, with a potential gang link confirmed.
The Lancaster Police Department has set up multiple channels for the public to share information about the case.
Cunningham and Mickle are currently held at the Lancaster County Detention Center without bond.
