Elon Musk’s recent gaming session ended prematurely after the Tesla and SpaceX CEO faced extensive ridicule during a livestream from his private jet.
Musk went live on X on Saturday, April 5, playing Path of Exile 2 aboard his jet as part of an “airborne continuity test” for his satellite internet service, Starlink. He aimed to demonstrate his internet service and gaming skills, but the broadcast quickly turned into an opportunity for other players to mock him.
Shortly after the livestream started, Musk received numerous messages in the game’s chat filled with personal insults. “You have no real friends and will die alone,” read one message. Another stated, “You ruined the country just like you ruined all your marriages.”
The comments included remarks on his appearance and business endeavors. One user asked, “Elon, how is it possible to look this dumb and ugly why is ur Tesla company falling apart.” Another player, posing as Ashley St. Clair, a MAGA influencer, said, “Elon. It’s me, Ashley St Clair. I have no other means of contacting you so I bought PoE2 early access just for this. Please pay your child support. Thank you Elon.”
Attempting to manage the situation, Musk said, “Anyone spamming the chat will get uhhh,” before using the ignore function on some messages, as reported by the Tribune. However, the trolling did not cease.
One participant referenced statements by Musk’s estranged daughter, Vivian Wilson, who had criticized his gaming skills. Wilson previously discussed her father’s abilities during an interview with Twitch streamer Hasan Piker.
Wilson, who claimed she and her twin brother often supported Musk in Overwatch when she was 12, remarked on his gaming talent. Kotaku reported that Wilson identified Musk as a Bronze-ranked Torbjörn main in Overwatch, a low competitive rank.
Despite Musk’s claims of being a top-tier player in various online games, his performance in Path of Exile 2 raised doubts. Gamers questioned whether someone was “boosting” his account, as his characters seemed unusually advanced for his alleged playtime.
Such suspicions were fueled when Musk was removed from Path of Exile 2 for “performing too many actions too fast.” Responding to queries about his skills, Musk jokingly mentioned having a “Chinese driver” for his account named “Elon Ma,” seen by many as an admission of account boosting.
Prominent gaming figures also commented on the situation. Twitch streamer Asmongold challenged Musk to prove his gaming level, offering to exclusively stream on X for a year if Musk could validate his skills.
During the livestream, Musk appeared unsettled by the constant criticism. He played music by his former partner Grimes, with whom he has three children, adding to the tense atmosphere.
Musk struggled with game mechanics, according to Men’s Journal, repeatedly losing to the game’s initial bosses. After his character’s third defeat, Musk ended the livestream, citing a lost connection.
One viewer remarked that Musk “rage quit” after continuously failing against a tutorial boss in hardcore mode, further calling into question his gaming expertise.
This gaming incident adds to Musk’s recent public controversies. He recently labeled a Ubisoft-affiliated content creator as a “fraud” and “sellout,” which reportedly led to his daughter’s comments about his gaming abilities.
As Musk seeks to build a presence within the gaming community, the livestream’s outcome underscores the challenges he faces in establishing authenticity in an environment that values skill and dedication over celebrity.
