A seven-month-old infant in Columbus, Ohio, was fatally attacked by one of her family’s three pit bulls, an incident described by police as a tragic accident.
Elizah Turner died on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, after the attack. She was initially taken to a nearby fire station and then transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The infant’s parents, Mackenzie Copley and Kameron Turner, shared their grief on social media after the loss of their daughter.
“I will never understand why!!!” Copley wrote on Facebook Saturday, along with pictures of her daughter with the family dogs.
Copley noted that the dog responsible for the attack had been a constant companion to her daughter, sharing her life every day.
Kameron Turner also expressed his anguish on social media, stating life was unfair and questioning how to continue without his daughter. In another post, he said he would give his life to bring her back.
Elizah’s obituary described her as a joyful child who was often smiling. Her presence was said to light up any room, and her laugh was noted as contagious.
The exact circumstances of the fatal incident remain unclear. Columbus Police indicated that the situation escalated rapidly after the baby was bitten by one of the family’s dogs.
Columbus Police Sergeant James Fuqua commented on the emotional impact the incident has had on first responders. “There is really not a lot of words I can say to convey how I feel,” Fuqua told WBNS.
Fuqua added that the tragedy deeply affected those involved in the response, many of whom are parents themselves.
Police have released body camera footage showing officers arriving at the scene. The family had moved into the home about a week before the incident.
No charges are expected to be filed at this time, though the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office is still reviewing the case and has not ruled out charges entirely.
All three of the family’s pit bulls were taken into custody by Franklin County Animal Control. The agency is leading the investigation and will decide the dogs’ fate following the inquiry.
Local reports indicate the pit bulls were named Kilo, Kane, and Kash, but it has not been confirmed which one was responsible for the fatal attack.
The community has shown support for the grieving family. A GoFundMe page has been created to assist Elizah’s parents, who also have a four-year-old son, with funeral expenses.
A similar incident recently occurred in Baytown, Texas, where a six-month-old baby was also killed by a family pit bull, which was euthanized afterward.
