A confrontation between tech billionaire Elon Musk and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent erupted in a heated exchange at the West Wing last week, drawing attention to the existing tensions within President Trump’s economic team.
The disagreement, which took place near the Oval Office with President Trump and other officials present, focused on the leadership of the Internal Revenue Service. One source described the scene as a “WWE-style” shouting match between “two billionaire, middle-aged men” in the West Wing.
According to a witness, “The F bombs started to fly,” necessitating an aide to intervene and separate the two men as the argument intensified.
The core issue of the dispute was an appointment for IRS leadership. Musk, leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), advocated for Gary Shapley, a former IRS agent known for leaking information about Hunter Biden’s taxes, as acting IRS commissioner. Bessent opposed this and supported his deputy, Michael Faulkender, for the position.
During the argument, Bessent criticized Musk’s DOGE initiative for not achieving promised budget cuts. Musk allegedly responded by accusing Bessent of being a “Soros agent” and mocked his previous experience with “a failed hedge fund.”
The incident highlights contrasting approaches to government reform between Musk and Bessent. Sources suggest Bessent emphasizes reform and stabilization, while Musk adopts a more aggressive strategy, described by some insiders as willing to “break things in the process of reform.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt minimized the incident’s significance when addressing reporters. “It’s no secret President Trump has put together a team of people who are incredibly passionate about the issues impacting our country,” Leavitt stated, emphasizing that “disagreements are a normal part of any healthy policy process” without addressing specific details.
The disagreement stems from deeper issues beyond the IRS appointment. Tensions between Musk and Bessent reportedly began during the presidential transition when Musk unsuccessfully lobbied for Howard Lutnick to be appointed Treasury Secretary over Bessent.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, present during the confrontation, reportedly supported Musk’s position in the exchange.
Following the dispute, President Trump sided with Bessent, removing Shapley from the position three days after his appointment and installing Faulkender as acting IRS commissioner. However, insiders believe the power struggle between Musk and Bessent is likely to continue.
This is not Musk’s first conflict with senior Trump administration officials. He has previously had public disagreements with other Cabinet members, including reportedly calling senior counselor for trade and manufacturing Peter Navarro a “moron.”
The public nature of these disagreements raises questions about the administration’s internal dynamics, though the White House maintains that such passionate debates ultimately strengthen policy outcomes.
Musk’s role within the administration appears to be evolving. He recently announced plans to reduce his involvement with DOGE to focus more on his businesses, including Tesla. Musk stated he plans to limit his government work to “one or two days per week” after May, when his appointment as a special government employee ends.
Despite these internal conflicts, President Trump continues to support Musk’s involvement in the administration, valuing his business experience and external perspective.
The incident underscores the challenges of integrating figures like Musk into traditional government structures. While his approach has appealed to those seeking significant government reform, it has caused friction with career officials and appointees who prefer institutional stability.
As the administration progresses, balancing these competing visions for government reform, especially for an agency as critical as the IRS, will remain a point of contention.
For now, Bessent appears to have prevailed in this round of the power struggle, with his preferred candidate assuming the role of acting IRS commissioner. However, with months remaining in Musk’s government role, albeit in a reduced capacity, further clashes cannot be ruled out.
The Treasury Department and representatives for Musk have not provided further comments on the incident beyond the White House’s official statement praising “healthy debate” among administration officials.
