Henderson State University basketball player Jamarion Brown, 23, was fatally shot in the head during a pool party in East Camp County, Texas, in the early morning of May 24, 2025. Authorities arrested a 17-year-old suspect who has been charged with murder related to the incident.
According to the Camp County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received multiple reports of a shooting at the party on Friday, May 23, and discovered Brown with a critical gunshot wound to the head. Though a helicopter arrived at the scene, Brown was initially transported to a nearby hospital before being flown to a medical facility in Tyler, Texas, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Onterrian Jamour Newton, 17, from Mount Pleasant, Texas, was detained on May 28 and is facing murder charges. Newton is held in the Camp County Jail with no bond, and additional charges are being considered related to other injuries sustained during the shooting.
Two additional individuals were injured with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. One victim was shot in the leg, and another in the hip. Camp County Sheriff John Cortelyou mentioned that further charges against Newton concerning these injuries are still under review.
Brown, also from Mount Pleasant, Texas, was a junior guard for the Henderson State Reddies. He transferred to this Division II institution in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, from Southwestern Christian College, participating in one season. During the 2024-25 season, he averaged 6.5 points and 3.6 rebounds over 23.6 minutes per game.
Henderson State University issued statements expressing sorrow over Brown’s death. The athletics department noted his influence on campus during his brief time in Arkadelphia. University officials remarked on his recognizable presence and respected reputation among students, faculty, and staff, emphasizing his welcoming nature.
Officials described Brown as a committed competitor and valued teammate of the 2024-25 men’s basketball team. His dedication, work ethic, and positive attitude were highlighted as representing the Reddie Spirit, bringing honor to both himself and the university.
Henderson State men’s basketball coach Jimmy Elgas commented on the team’s loss, stating, “His loss leaves a tremendous void on our campus.” Elgas emphasized Brown’s significant impact not only on the court but throughout the university community, noting that he will be remembered and honored.
Brown’s obituary indicates he leaves behind a fiancée, Sydni Parrish, along with his parents and ten siblings. It describes him as a positive influence, known for his warm demeanor, devotion to family.
The obituary also highlights Brown’s passion for basketball, underscoring his commitment and enjoyment of the sport. It notes that family was central to his life, providing strength and purpose, and that he left behind cherished memories for those who knew him.

The Texas Rangers are actively investigating the shooting. The case remains open, with potential additional charges as legal proceedings against Newton continue.
