CNN Reporter Torched After Insensitive Trump Comment

The White House condemned former CNN correspondent Jim Acosta as a “disgraceful human being” after he made controversial jokes about President Donald Trump’s deceased ex-wife Ivana Trump during a podcast appearance on June 17, 2025.

During an episode of “The Contrarian” podcast with Jennifer Rubin, Acosta criticized Trump’s immigration policies and argued the president was a hypocrite regarding immigration enforcement due to his immigrant wives. While discussing ICE raids, Acosta questioned why immigration officials were not conducting raids at Trump properties.

The former White House correspondent then made remarks about Trump’s late first wife, who is buried at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. Acosta referenced her burial location and joked that immigrants are always doing jobs that Americans don’t want to do. His comments prompted laughter from podcast co-host April Ryan and Rubin during the recorded session.

Ivana Trump, who died in 2022, was the mother of the president’s three eldest children: Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric. She was a native of then-Czechoslovakia who became a naturalized American citizen. The remarks came as part of Acosta’s broader criticism of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policies.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt responded sharply to the comments when contacted by Fox News Digital. The incident occurred during ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and various news organizations over coverage and access issues.

Acosta, who left CNN in January 2025, had previously been one of Trump’s most vocal critics during his first presidential term. He frequently clashed with the administration while serving as the network’s chief White House correspondent, often mixing editorial commentary with his reporting duties.

The former correspondent has maintained his strongly critical stance toward Trump since becoming an independent journalist earlier this year. During his CNN departure in January, Acosta advised viewers not to give in to lies or fear, specifically referencing Trump as a tyrant in his final broadcast.

Trump celebrated Acosta’s departure from CNN through a post on his Truth Social platform in January, calling him one of the worst and most dishonest reporters in journalism history. The former president expressed satisfaction that Acosta had been relegated to late-night programming due to poor ratings before ultimately leaving the network.

This latest controversy comes amid broader tensions between the Trump administration and news organizations. The White House has been engaged in disputes with multiple outlets over coverage and access, including a significant conflict with the Associated Press over naming conventions for geographic locations.

The Associated Press has been barred from certain White House events since February 2025 due to the organization’s refusal to adopt Trump’s renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. The wire service maintains its editorial independence by continuing to use the original geographic name while acknowledging the administration’s preferred terminology.

Press freedom advocates have criticized the administration’s approach to media relations, arguing that denying access based on editorial decisions violates First Amendment principles. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression and other organizations have condemned what they characterize as viewpoint discrimination against news outlets.

During Trump’s first presidential term, similar conflicts arose over press access and coverage. Acosta himself had his White House press credentials temporarily suspended in 2018 after a contentious exchange with Trump during a press conference. A federal judge later ordered the restoration of his press pass, ruling that his due process rights had been violated.

The current incident highlights ongoing tensions between the administration and journalists who have been critical of Trump’s policies. Immigration enforcement has become a particularly contentious topic, with ICE conducting raids in various sanctuary cities, including Los Angeles, California, where protests and confrontations with law enforcement have occurred.

Acosta’s podcast appearance also included criticism of American farmers, suggesting they have been led astray by far-right influences in their voting patterns. He argued that many rural Americans are not receiving reliable news information, contributing to their political choices.
