Missing Man Vacationing With Wife Found Dead

The body of Brian Patrick Tarrence, a 52-year-old Manhattan resident who disappeared while vacationing in Turks and Caicos, has been positively identified by local authorities following forensic dental analysis. The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force confirmed the identification on July 16, nearly three weeks after Tarrence vanished on June 25.

Tarrence was on a one-year wedding anniversary vacation with his wife Maria when he disappeared from their accommodation at the Paradise Inn in Grace Bay. Security cameras captured him leaving the villa alone at approximately 3:40 a.m. on June 25, walking toward town with his phone in hand. His wife was asleep at the time and discovered him missing in the morning.

The decomposed body was discovered on July 5 in a roughly five-foot-deep ditch along the roadside near the couple’s hotel. The remains were found during a coordinated search operation led by local police in the Grace Bay area. Private investigator Carl DeFazio, hired by the family to assist in the search, indicated the body was located approximately a 20-minute walk from where Tarrence was last seen, about one block off Leeward Highway in a residential commercial area.

An autopsy conducted on July 11 revealed no signs of trauma on the body. Police have stated there is no suspicion of foul play in Tarrence’s death. The identification was confirmed through forensic dental analysis conducted by a qualified dental specialist, as the body’s advanced state of decomposition made visual identification impossible. Authorities are awaiting final autopsy and toxicology reports to complete their investigation.

DeFazio, a former NYPD officer and Marine who worked closely with local authorities, noted that Tarrence had been experiencing mental health issues on the day he disappeared. He described Tarrence as acting incoherent and not behaving like himself, which concerned his wife. The couple had gone on a boat trip the day before Tarrence’s disappearance, during which his wife noticed he seemed off.

According to DeFazio, Tarrence stayed up late watching television before heading out for the nighttime walk with his phone, but left his passport behind.

The search for Tarrence involved extensive efforts from multiple agencies and volunteers. The Ministry of Tourism and Experience Turks and Caicos coordinated ground searches, drone surveillance, and a comprehensive review of CCTV footage. Local residents and volunteers also participated in the search operations. Tourism Minister Zhavargo Jolly said, “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Tarrence.”

Tarrence, who worked as vice president at a software firm, had recently moved from Monroe, New York, to Manhattan to be closer to his stepson, who attends college in the city. The couple arrived in Turks and Caicos on June 22 for what was planned as a seven-day romantic getaway, scheduled to return on June 29.

During the investigation, authorities noted that Tarrence’s wallet and phone remained missing, with no activity detected on his credit cards or phone records following his disappearance. DeFazio emphasized that the lack of financial activity suggested robbery was unlikely, as any stolen cards would typically be used immediately.

The case attracted significant attention, with Tarrence’s family from North Texas traveling to the Caribbean island to assist in the search efforts. His brother from Plano joined the search operations, working alongside the private investigator and the United States Embassy.

Local authorities emphasized throughout the investigation that they found no evidence of suspicious circumstances surrounding either Tarrence’s disappearance or death. The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force conducted daily systematic search operations in surrounding areas, utilizing ground patrols, drone surveillance, and a detailed review of security footage from the area.

The police force has extended condolences to Tarrence’s family and friends during this difficult time, thanking the public for their patience and support throughout the investigation. Anyone with information relating to the case has been urged to contact local authorities or Crime Stoppers.
