A woman’s body was found in the Hudson River off Lower Manhattan, New York, on Wednesday evening, July 16, 2025, prompting an investigation into whether she is the same individual who entered the waterway the previous day. Despite efforts by two individuals attempting to rescue her on Tuesday, the woman drowned.
The woman, who remains unidentified, was discovered at approximately 7:50 p.m. near the intersection of Canal and West streets on Manhattan’s lower West Side. The New York Police Department Harbor Unit arrived at the location and extracted her from the river, where Emergency Medical Services personnel confirmed her death.
Authorities suspect the deceased may be the same woman witnessed jumping into the Hudson River on Tuesday at around 10 a.m. from Pier 34 at Hudson River Park in Manhattan, New York. Witnesses described the woman as being between 30 and 40 years old and observed her prior to entering the water.
According to witness statements, the woman appeared agitated before her plunge. “She was screaming at everyone that was walking by saying, ‘You’re all demons trying to get me,'” an anonymous witness reported to the Tribeca Tribune. The witness further mentioned that by the time people approached, she had submerged and did not reappear.
Two men observed her distress and entered the Hudson River in an attempt to rescue her. However, they could not reach her as she had moved too far into the river. The NYPD and the Fire Department of New York responded to reports of three individuals in the water near Watts and West streets.
First responders used drop ladders to rescue the two men, who were then taken to a local hospital, treated, and released in stable condition. Neither rescuer sustained injuries during their attempt.
The woman was seen swimming several yards before disappearing beneath the surface. Despite an extensive search by the NYPD Harbor Unit and FDNY divers, she was not located during the initial rescue operation on Tuesday.
Some accounts suggest that the woman removed her clothing before entering the water. Witnesses reported seeing her remove her clothes and jump into the Hudson River from the pier near Canal Street in Lower Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood, New York.
Pier 34, the site of the incident, is a popular area in Hudson River Park known for its narrow walkways, referred to as “finger piers.” It attracts pedestrians, joggers, and fishermen, and includes a ventilation shaft for the Holland Tunnel at its end.
Search efforts for the missing woman persisted throughout Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday. Officers from the Harbor Unit and FDNY personnel extensively searched the area using boats and underwater equipment. Emergency vehicles were seen along the West Side Highway near the pier during the search.
FDNY Assistant Chief Kevin Brennan commented on the hazards of the Hudson River in this vicinity. “It’s dangerous water, the river here,” Brennan told the Gothamist. “Surely, you don’t want to jump in.”
This incident marks the second water-related death in the area within a week. A man had entered the Hudson River near Pier 40 the previous Thursday, July 10. His body was discovered on Sunday, July 13, around 6:30 p.m. after an extensive search by NYPD divers and harbor units. EMS workers declared him dead at the scene, and his identity remains unknown.
In another unrelated incident on Wednesday, July 16, a man’s body was recovered from the waters near Staten Island, New York’s Howland Hook Marine Terminal, between the Goethals and Bayonne bridges to New Jersey. The Port Authority removed the body from the water and is working to identify the individual.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York will determine the cause of death for the woman found in the Hudson River. Police have not disclosed any details regarding her identity, and the investigation into both the Tuesday incident and Wednesday’s discovery is ongoing.
The NYPD is requesting anyone with information about either incident to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), visit crimestoppers.nypdonline.org, download the NYPD Crime Stoppers mobile app, or text 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577. Authorities continue to investigate whether the body recovered Wednesday is the same person who entered the river on Tuesday, as they work to unravel the events of both days.
