Musk Accused of Trying to Damage Trump

A former colleague of Elon Musk has issued a caution to President Donald Trump regarding the billionaire’s potential for retribution, suggesting Musk may seek to undermine the administration despite a recent public reconciliation.

Philip Low, a neuroscientist aged 45 who founded the brain-monitoring firm NeuroVigil, has been acquainted with Musk for 14 years and ended his advisory role at the company on December 17, 2021. Low dismissed the idea that any reconciliation between Musk and Trump would be authentic, deeming it “purely cosmetic” and transactional.

In discussions with reporters, Low indicated that Musk’s behavior often involves seeking control and establishing rival ventures when he cannot dominate. He described Musk as obsessive and inclined to hold grudges, suggesting these traits could be particularly threatening to political allies who defy him.

This warning comes amid a continuing political conflict between Musk and Trump that publicly emerged in early June over Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill.” Musk has repeatedly criticized the 940-page spending proposal, labeling it “a disgusting abomination” and threatened to start a new political party if it passed Congress.

The relationship between Low and Musk deteriorated significantly after Low removed Musk from NeuroVigil’s advisory board, preventing him from exercising stock options that could have negatively impacted the company. At that time, Musk had launched his competing brain implant company, Neuralink, and was looking to distance himself from his earlier investment.

Low’s public criticism of Musk intensified in January 2025 following widely criticized salutes during Trump’s post-inauguration rally on January 20. Low, whose father survived the Holocaust, confronted Musk privately before publishing a viral 2,000-word open letter condemning his former associate’s actions.

The letter accused Musk of having an insatiable “lust for power” and of destabilizing organizations he cannot control. Low noted that Musk’s strategy involves investing in companies, attempting to undermine them, and creating competing entities when takeover efforts fail.

The Trump-Musk political dispute peaked in early June when Trump suggested ending government contracts with Musk’s companies, such as SpaceX and Tesla. In response, Musk threatened to decommission SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, the only American vehicle capable of ferrying astronauts to the International Space Station. He later claimed Trump would have lost the 2024 election without his financial backing and suggested impeachment for the president.

Musk donated about $288 million during the 2024 election cycle, establishing himself as the largest individual political donor in the country. His America PAC initially promised aggressive involvement in the 2026 midterm elections, though Musk reduced these ambitions shortly before his public clash with Trump.

Low indicated that Musk’s political threat goes beyond mere opposition to specific policies. He suggested Musk has cultivated enough support among Trump’s base to pose a genuine political challenge, particularly if the president continues to ignore the billionaire’s policy preferences.

Recent developments indicate the feud persists despite public statements from both parties indicating calmer relations. On June 29, Musk renewed his attacks on the spending bill ahead of a pivotal Senate vote, arguing it would destroy millions of jobs and cause strategic harm to the country.

Low’s analysis draws from his extensive personal experience with Musk’s behavior patterns. He detailed how their friendship evolved from late-night discussions in Los Angeles, California, where both men shared stories about challenging childhoods and personal struggles, to a business relationship that eventually soured over competing interests in neurotechnology.

Tesla’s stock price declined 14.26% during the June confrontation between Musk and Trump, reflecting investor concerns about the potential impact of political entanglements on the electric vehicle manufacturer. The company has already faced challenges from consumer protests and declining sales related to Musk’s political activities.

Low maintains that his former associate’s pattern of behavior spans multiple business relationships, citing conflicts with PayPal’s Peter Thiel, Tesla’s Martin Eberhard, and OpenAI’s Sam Altman. He suggested that Trump’s relationship with Musk follows a predictable trajectory that typically ends in acrimonious separation.

Several Silicon Valley figures have privately thanked Low for his public criticism of Musk, though many hesitate to speak openly due to business relationships with investors linked to Musk’s ventures. Low indicated he has assembled legal representation in preparation for potential retaliation from his former associate.

In their initial fallout last month, Musk threatened to form a new political party to unseat Republicans who backed Trump’s spending bill, accused the president of appearing in Jeffrey Epstein’s files, and suggested Trump should be impeached. Trump retaliated by proposing the termination of federal contracts with SpaceX and Tesla, hinting at possible investigations, and publicly questioning Musk’s mental stability.

With the reigniting of their feud, much is at stake for both sides. For Musk, the conflict risks billions in government contracts and regulatory scrutiny that could impact Tesla and SpaceX operations. For Trump, further escalation could fracture Republican support ahead of the 2026 midterms and bolster a potential political rival with significant financial resources and influence among conservative voters.
