Beloved Comedian Shot Dead at 52

A 52-year-old comedian from Maryland was fatally shot in Mississippi on Wednesday, August 20, with a suspect now in custody, according to the Southaven Police Department.

Reginald Carroll, known professionally as Reggie Carroll, was identified as the victim in the deadly shooting that occurred in the area of Burton Lane in Southaven, Mississippi. Officers responded to reports of the shooting and discovered Carroll suffering from gunshot wounds at the scene.

Medical personnel attempted to save Carroll’s life using emergency treatment techniques, but he succumbed to his injuries. The Southaven Police Department confirmed Carroll’s death following the shooting incident.

Authorities arrested 38-year-old Tranell Marquise Williams in connection with Carroll’s murder. Williams has been charged with the comedian’s death, police reported.

The shooting represents the loss of an entertainer who had built a career in comedy. Carroll, who hailed from Maryland, was performing or visiting in the Mississippi area at the time of the incident.

Southaven police have not released details about the circumstances leading to the shooting or the relationship, if any, between Carroll and the suspect. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the motive behind the fatal shooting.

The police have not specified the exact location on Burton Lane or the time of day when the shooting took place. Officers arrived to find Carroll already wounded and requiring immediate medical attention.

Carroll’s death marks another incident of violence affecting members of the entertainment community. The comedian had maintained an active presence on social media, where fans and fellow performers have begun expressing their condolences following news of his death.

The Southaven Police Department indicated that Williams remains in custody as the case proceeds through the legal system. Authorities have not disclosed whether Williams has entered a plea or if additional charges may be filed in connection with the comedian’s death.

Carroll performed standup at comedy venues nationwide, sharing the stage with artists like Mo’Nique, who affectionately referred to him as her “brother in comedy.”

In 2000, Carroll was featured on the iconic live variety show Showtime at the Apollo, recorded at Harlem’s legendary Apollo Theater. He also made a guest appearance on UPN’s Moesha spinoff “The Parkers,” sharing the screen with Mo’Nique and Countess Vaughn. In later years, Carroll produced and performed in the 2023 standup special “Knockout Kings of Comedy” and took on the lead role in the 2022 TV movie “Rent & Go.”

On Facebook, Carroll’s brother, Jonathan Carroll, expressed gratitude to friends, family, and fans for their support during this difficult time.
