A Royal Caribbean crew member’s death was reported after he allegedly stabbed a fellow crew member and then jumped overboard from the largest cruise ship in the world on Thursday evening near the Bahamas, according to authorities.
The incident took place at approximately 7:30 p.m. on July 24, 2025, on the Icon of the Seas while it was off the coast of San Salvador Island in the Bahamas. The 35-year-old male crew member from South Africa is accused of stabbing a 28-year-old female colleague, also from South Africa, multiple times in the upper body before fleeing and jumping into the sea.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed the man was found unresponsive in the water and was pronounced dead by the ship’s medical team despite rescue attempts. The injured female crew member received immediate medical attention and is reported to be in stable condition.
Passengers aboard the ship reported hearing “oscar oscar oscar” over the intercom, which is Royal Caribbean’s code for a man overboard situation. Video footage shared by passengers showed crew members hastily responding as the massive vessel slowed down and turned around to conduct search and rescue operations.
A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean described the incident as resulting from a personal dispute between the two crew members. The company stated that “one of the crew members was injured, was attended to by the onboard medical team, and she is now in stable condition.” The cruise line expressed condolences to the family of the deceased crew member and noted they would not release further details to maintain the family’s privacy.
The cruise line’s security team responded immediately to the incident, and rescue teams deployed a high-speed boat to search for the man who had jumped overboard. Witnesses saw crew members throwing life rings into the water to mark the location where he entered the ocean.
Due to the Icon of the Seas being nearly 1,200 feet long and weighing about 276,000 tons, it required significant time to slow down and maneuver back to the rescue site. The ship was traveling at a relatively low speed after a day at sea and was heading to Royal Caribbean’s private island, CocoCay, for a planned stop the following day.
The Icon of the Seas continued its scheduled seven-day Eastern Caribbean itinerary after the incident. The ship had departed PortMiami, Florida, on July 19, making stops in St. Thomas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Bahamas before returning to Florida. The vessel arrived at CocoCay as planned on July 25 and returned to PortMiami on July 26 to complete its voyage.
Many passengers remained unaware of the incident until much later, as it was not publicly announced throughout the ship. Some passengers shared videos on social media depicting the rescue operation and crew members being pulled from the water onto rescue boats.
The Icon of the Seas is recognized as the world’s largest cruise ship, with a maximum capacity of 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members spread across its 19 floors. The vessel cost approximately $2 billion to build and includes seven pools, six waterslides, nine whirlpools, and what Royal Caribbean markets as the world’s largest waterpark at sea.
An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death of the male crew member. The investigation into the stabbing and subsequent events is ongoing, with authorities looking into the circumstances leading to the violent confrontation.
The incident is considered rare for cruise ships, according to travel industry experts. Royal Caribbean has not yet indicated whether any changes to security protocols or crew procedures will follow the incident.
Upon completing its Eastern Caribbean voyage, the Icon of the Seas departed on its next scheduled seven-day Western Caribbean cruise as planned. The cruise line confirmed that no passengers were harmed or placed at risk during the incident involving the two crew members.
