2 Dead, 5 Injured in Casino Mass Schooting

Two people died and five others were injured after a gunman opened fire outside the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino in Eagle Pass, Texas, on September 27, 2025, at approximately 11:45 p.m.

The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Keryan Rashad Jones of San Antonio, fled the scene in a black Nissan Frontier before being apprehended by the Texas Department of Public Safety near Stockdale in Wilson County on Sunday morning following a pursuit.

Marcus Antley, a retired U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent who served for more than 20 years, was pronounced dead at the scene. Alicia Sanchez, 32, of Carrizo Springs died while being transported to the hospital. Antley had been married to his wife Margarita for 47 years, and she was among those injured in the shooting, receiving approximately 12 stitches after a bullet passed through her leg.

Margarita Antley recounted the chaotic moments following the shooting, telling reporters she kept calling her husband’s name and pleading for help. “We were walking out of there laughing,” she stated, adding that she heard he died instantly and did not suffer.

According to Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber, Jones had been inside the casino late Saturday night before walking out to his vehicle and returning to open fire near the entrance. The shooting occurred during a raffle event that had drawn a large crowd to the casino.

Five additional victims were airlifted to San Antonio hospitals in critical condition. University Hospital confirmed treating two patients: a 22-year-old woman who was discharged and a 59-year-old woman who remained in fair condition as of Monday evening.

Jones was tracked through his vehicle to a Circle K convenience store in Stockdale around 7:40 a.m. Sunday. During the apprehension, DPS troopers fired at his vehicle before successfully stopping him using a PIT maneuver. Officers deployed a Taser to subdue Jones, and a firearm was recovered from the scene.

Witnesses described hearing approximately 12 gunshots and seeing chaos as people attempted to escape the casino. One bullet struck an entrance door while another hit a slot machine inside the facility. Rachel Palacios, who was playing slot machines during the incident, indicated she immediately recognized the sounds as gunshots and ran to hide in a closet before eventually escaping with her husband.

The Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino released a statement expressing heartbreak over the tragic events and announced the facility would remain temporarily closed out of respect for those impacted and to allow authorities to continue their investigation.

Jones faces two counts of capital murder and five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held in Maverick County jail on a $4.5 million bond and placed in solitary confinement for security reasons, according to Sheriff Schmerber.

The Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas Police Department is leading the investigation with assistance from multiple agencies, including the Texas Rangers, FBI, Maverick County Sheriff’s Office, Eagle Pass Police Department, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Eagle Pass Mayor Aaron Valdez identified Antley as a beloved community member who dedicated much of his life to public service and law enforcement. Valdez noted that Antley would be remembered for his career, generosity, leadership, and lasting friendships built throughout the Eagle Pass region.

Alicia Sanchez’s mother, Vonda Feagin, confirmed her daughter’s death in a Facebook post, expressing heartbreak and indicating the family would fight for justice. Sanchez was survived by five children and had battled epilepsy since age 12.

Maverick County Judge Ramsey English Cantu expressed grief over the incident and emphasized that violence would not be tolerated in the community. He assured residents that all local, state, and tribal law enforcement agencies were working to ensure safety and security.

The casino, described as one of the largest in Texas, features more than 3,300 slot machines, live poker, bingo, multiple restaurants and bars, and a 249-room hotel. It operates on reservation land near the Rio Grande and serves as a popular weekend destination for visitors from across South Texas.

Authorities have not yet determined a motive for the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing, with officials requesting anyone with photos, video, or information about the incident to contact the Maverick County Sheriff’s Office.

Sources reported that Jones previously served in the National Guard and was once stationed in Arizona, though authorities have not confirmed these details as part of their official investigation.
