Beloved Game Show Star Dies at 91

Andrew Wood, the creative force behind ITV’s iconic darts-themed game show “Bullseye,” has died at the age of 91, his daughter confirmed in a heartfelt statement on social media.

Wood co-created “Bullseye” in 1980 alongside comedian Norman Vaughan, launching what would become a staple of British television throughout the 1980s and 1990s. The show produced 326 episodes across 16 series during its original run and established itself as one of the most beloved game shows in television history.

Laura Wood, Andrew’s daughter and the current producer of “Bullseye,” announced her father’s passing on LinkedIn, revealing he died on Sunday, November 16. She shared an emotional tribute that painted a picture of both a television legend and a devoted father.

“On Sunday morning, my Mum and I said a goodbye that we always knew was coming, but so desperately never wanted to,” Laura wrote. “Most people will know him as the man (the legend!) who created Bullseye. I simply know him as Dad.”

She continued by describing her father’s remarkable life journey, which extended far beyond his television success. Before creating “Bullseye,” Wood owned the first record store in Kingston-upon-Thames and worked with Don Arden, known as the Godfather of Rock in the music industry. He even cut hair for Formula 1 drivers during his diverse career.

The game show format that Wood developed combined darts competition with traditional game show elements, creating a unique entertainment experience that resonated with British audiences. The program aired on ITV from 1981 to 1996, initially hosted by Jim Bowen, who became synonymous with the show through his popular catchphrases and warm hosting style. Bowen reportedly died in 2018 at age 80.

Laura reflected on her father’s drive and vision, noting that he understood from the beginning that “Bullseye” would be a hit. She described him as someone who remained driven, passionate, and relentless in his vision throughout his life, qualities that helped transform a simple concept into a cultural phenomenon.

“He taught me that you have to believe in yourself, your goals and your dreams, because if you don’t, no one else will,” she wrote in her tribute. “He leaves behind the most wonderful legacy with Bullseye, and I can only hope I can continue to make him proud by carrying his creation forward.”

The show’s influence has endured long after its original run concluded. ITV recently rebooted the show, with a Christmas special airing in December 2024. Freddie Flintoff took over hosting duties for the revival, which capitalized on renewed interest in darts following teenage sensation Luke Littler’s rapid rise in the sport.

Wood remained involved with his creation throughout his life, applying to trademark the “Bullseye” name. This entrepreneurial spirit reflected the same innovative thinking that led him to create the original show more than four decades ago.

The original program became more than just a game show—it became a beloved piece of television history that captured the hearts of audiences for 15 years.

Wood’s legacy lives on through the continued popularity of “Bullseye” and its introduction to new generations of viewers who have discovered the charm of the darts-themed game show he created.
