A mass shooting in Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday evening, November 15, 2025, left two people dead, including a 10-year-old boy, and three others injured in what local officials are calling a devastating tragedy for the community. The shooting occurred around 7 p.m. on Chancellor Avenue near Wainwright Street, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Newark police officers responded to reports of gunfire and found five people with gunshot wounds at the scene. Paramedics transported the 10-year-old boy, Jordan Garcia, and a 21-year-old woman, Kiyah Mae Scott, to University Hospital, where both were pronounced dead.
Three additional victims were also injured in the shooting. Jordan’s 11-year-old brother, a 19-year-old man, and a 60-year-old man were all reported to be in stable condition following the incident. The severity of their injuries remains unknown at this time, though officials confirmed all three survivors are receiving medical treatment.
The crime scene showed evidence of significant gunfire. At least 17 evidence markers were visible at the intersection of Chancellor Avenue and Leslie Street, with multiple red cups marking shell casings on the sidewalk. Newark police blocked off a large portion of Chancellor Avenue throughout Saturday night as investigators gathered evidence and processed the scene.
Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka released a statement addressing the recent violence that has shaken the community. Baraka called it a dark and devastating day in Newark, referencing both this shooting and an earlier incident in which a two-year-old child died after falling from a window. The mayor emphasized the city’s commitment to pursuing justice for the victims and their families.
In his statement, Baraka directly addressed the shooter, urging the killer to turn himself in. He added that Newark would work tirelessly with the prosecutor’s office, state law enforcement, and federal agencies to ensure justice is served.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy acknowledged the shooting on social media Saturday night, asking people to “pray for the victims and their families.” The governor’s statement came as details about the incident were still emerging and law enforcement officials were beginning their investigation.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has not provided information about a suspect, potential arrests, or what may have led to the shooting. Officials confirmed the investigation is active and ongoing, with no further details available at this time.
Jordan Garcia was identified as a student in the Newark school system, as is his brother. Superintendent Roger Leon addressed the tragedy in a statement released Sunday evening, calling the shooting senseless. He noted the timing made the loss particularly painful as families prepare for the holiday season.
Leon said the district mourns the loss of one of its students and the woman who was killed, and continues to pray for the recovery of those who were wounded, including Jordan’s brother.
In response to the shooting, the Newark Board of Education activated its Crisis Management Unit. Starting Monday, grief counseling became available for students and staff members throughout the district. School officials encouraged anyone affected by the tragedy to seek support.
The shooting occurred in an area that has seen a reduction in gun violence in recent years. According to Newark Police data, shooting incidents in Precinct 5, where Saturday’s violence took place, have decreased each year since 2022. The precinct has recorded 33 reports of shots fired so far this year.
Community members expressed shock and sadness over the violence. Lamonte Vaughn, with the Office of Violence Prevention and Trauma Recovery, described the scene as disturbing. He said family members are absolutely traumatized by what happened to their loved ones, and therefore, the community needs to be there for them as well.
Authorities are seeking the public’s assistance in solving the case. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has established a tips line at 1-877-847-7432 for anyone with information about the shooting. Tips can be submitted anonymously.
A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest in the case. Law enforcement officials hope the substantial reward will encourage witnesses to come forward with details that could help identify and apprehend the shooter.
As the investigation continues, Newark residents are left grappling with the loss of two community members and hoping for the recovery of the three injured victims. The case remains under active investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and Newark Police.
