Rock Legend Dies at 63

Gary “Mani” Mounfield, a renowned bassist from Manchester, England, has passed away at the age of 63. Known for his influential roles in The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, his death was announced on Thursday, November 20, 2025, causing significant reverberations throughout the music industry.

The announcement was made on Facebook by his brother, Greg Mounfield, who stated: “IT IS WITH THE HEAVIEST OF HEARTS THAT I HAVE TO ANNOUNCE THE SAD PASSING OF MY BROTHER GARY MANI MOUNFIELD. RIP RKID.”

Emergency services responded to Mounfield’s residence in Heaton Moor, Stockport, England, at 10:42 a.m. on Thursday morning. Reports indicated that an ambulance arrived by 11 a.m., but no individual was transported to the hospital. The North West Ambulance Service confirmed the presence of emergency services at a private address that morning.

Mounfield, originally from Crumpsall, Manchester, gained prominence in the 1980s as the bassist for The Stone Roses, a pivotal British rock band. His bass work was central to the band’s sound, contributing to both of their studio albums. The Stone Roses were a key part of the Madchester movement, which combined indie rock with dance music and significantly influenced British youth culture.

After The Stone Roses disbanded in 1996, Mounfield continued his musical career with Primal Scream, a Scottish rock band. He remained with them until 2011, when he departed to assist in reforming The Stone Roses. The reunion was well-received, reviving the band’s original sound for audiences worldwide who had awaited their return for 15 years.

Throughout his career, Mounfield maintained strong ties to Manchester and its community. He was noted for his approachable demeanor, which resonated with fans beyond his musical achievements. His community involvement was evident in his charitable efforts, including fundraising events hosted with his wife to support organizations such as The Christie Hospital, The Stockport Charitable Trust, and Maggie’s.

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, described Mounfield as a warm and engaging individual. He recalled shared experiences, including a cancer charity event with Mounfield’s late wife, Imelda, while speaking to media outlets on Thursday.

Mounfield’s connection to Manchester extended to his lifelong support for Manchester United. He was known for his dedication to the team, reportedly selling his scooter to attend the 1999 Champions League final. The club honored his support by regularly playing The Stone Roses’ “This Is The One” at Old Trafford on matchdays, creating a lasting association between him and the stadium.

The music community began paying tribute soon after his death was announced. Rowetta of Happy Mondays shared her sorrow on social media. Tim Burgess of The Charlatans praised Mounfield as an exceptional talent, highlighting the regard in which he was held in the industry.

Liam Gallagher of Oasis also expressed his shock and sadness at the news. The tributes reflected not only Mounfield’s contributions to music but also his personal connections with those who knew him.

Residents of Heaton Moor described Mounfield as a private individual who valued family life away from the public eye. A neighbor mentioned that she occasionally collected parcels for him, noting his preference for privacy in his Stockport neighborhood.

Manchester United released a tribute, recognizing Mounfield as a music icon and lifelong supporter of the club. They noted his frequent presence at Old Trafford, emphasizing the close relationship between the musician and the football community in Manchester.

Mounfield’s impact on British rock music was significant, with a career spanning decades and including work with two major bands. From The Stone Roses’ psychedelic sound to Primal Scream’s edgier rock, Mounfield displayed versatility while maintaining his unique style. His adaptability and authenticity earned him respect from peers and fans alike.

As the news of his passing spread on Thursday, social media was filled with tributes from musicians, fans, and public figures. This response highlighted Mounfield’s substantial influence on British music and his enduring connection to Manchester. His legacy encompasses his musical contributions, character, community involvement, and ties to his hometown.

The passing of Mounfield has left his twin sons without parents, as their mother, Imelda, died from cancer nearly two years ago. Married for close to 25 years, the couple is survived by their 12-year-old boys, Gene and George.
