Two people died, and 20 others were injured in an explosion at a nursing home in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania, on December 23, 2025, following a suspected gas leak that caused part of the building to collapse.
The blast occurred at 2:14 p.m. at Bristol Health & Rehab Center, a 174-bed facility located at 905 Tower Road. The explosion struck the basement, damaging the kitchen and cafeteria before part of the building collapsed. Two explosions occurred at the facility, formerly known as Silver Lake Nursing Home.
Muthoni Nduthu, a 52-year-old employee and nurse at the facility, was killed in the blast. The second victim was a female resident whose name has not been released.
Nineteen people remained hospitalized following the explosion, though most victims have since been released. The incident displaced 119 residents from the nursing home in Bucks County.
PECO Energy Company workers were on site before the explosion, after the utility company was called for reports of a gas odor. A gas leak is suspected to have caused the blast. Local firefighters and county 911 dispatchers received no 911 calls about a gas odor before the explosion.
John Cordisco, an attorney with Cordisco & Saile LLC who said his firm is conducting an independent review of the incident, indicates there were reports of a gas odor at the facility before the explosion. He reiterated that PECO workers were called to the site in response to those reports when the blast occurred. “In this case, the timeline is critical because, based on the preliminary information, it seems that they had time to be able to evacuate the facility,” Cordisco said. Cordisco said his timeline information is based on interviews with residents and employees who were in the building before the explosion.
The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the explosion.
Saber Healthcare Group, a management consultant for the nursing home, became affiliated with the facility 24 days before the explosion.
Morgan & Morgan is representing the victims of the explosion. The law firm issued a statement saying it is investigating the incident and will work to achieve justice for those impacted by the blast. “This tragedy has shattered the lives of those that rely upon Bristol Health & Rehab Center for a safe environment,” the statement read.
Charles Winik Jr. and Kevin Dippolito led the emergency response to the explosion.
A fundraising campaign for Nduthu’s family has raised more than $32,000 to assist with funeral-related expenses.
