Australian actor Martin Grelis, known for his role in the science fiction classic “The Matrix,” has died at the age of 57.
Grelis’ death was confirmed Tuesday by his talent agency, Sophie Jermyn Management, which announced the news last week. The actor died on December 16, 2025, at his home in Australia after a routine medical procedure.
Grelis is survived by his son Sampson.
The veteran actor’s career spanned three decades in film and television. He played a helicopter pilot in the 1999 blockbuster “The Matrix,” appearing alongside Hollywood stars Keanu Reeves, 61, and Laurence Fishburne. The role in the groundbreaking sci-fi film marked one of his most recognized performances.
Beyond “The Matrix,” Grelis maintained a steady presence in Australian television and film. He played a detective in the 2014 mini-series “Schapelle,” which dramatized the trial of convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby. His television credits also included appearances in the popular Australian series “All Saints” and “Water Rats.”
Grelis appeared in the 2012 film “Iron Sky” and the television film “Mabo.” Earlier in his career, he had roles in the Australian drama “Big Sky” and the short film “The Trial.”
His final acting role came earlier this year in the television series “Alpha King,” where he starred alongside actress Mia Pimentel. The series marked the conclusion of a career that began in 1999 when he played Boba Fett in the Star Wars fan film “The Dark Redemption.”
Tributes poured in from colleagues and fans across social media following news of his death. The AAVA Australian Association of Voice Actors posted a remembrance on social media.
Australian actress Ada Nicodemou was among those mourning his loss. Another Matrix cast member, Carrie-Anne Moss, starred in the original 1999 film that launched one of cinema’s most influential franchises.
Throughout his career, Grelis worked across multiple genres in film and television, building a career marked by versatility and dedication to his craft.
The Australian film and television industry has lost a familiar face whose work touched multiple generations of viewers. From his breakthrough appearance in one of the most successful science fiction films of all time to his steady work in Australian television drama, Grelis maintained a presence in the industry for three decades.
His death represents another loss for the Australian entertainment community, which has produced numerous actors who have achieved international recognition while maintaining strong ties to domestic productions.
“The Matrix,” released in 1999, became a cultural phenomenon that redefined visual effects in cinema and spawned multiple sequels. The film’s influence on popular culture and the science fiction genre remains significant more than two decades after its release.
Grelis’ work in the original Matrix film, though a supporting role, placed him in one of the defining movies of the late 1990s. The film’s innovative approach to action sequences and its philosophical themes helped establish it as one of the most important science fiction films in cinema history.
