3-Year-Old Boy Killed as Car Crashes Into Holiday Parade

A three-year-old boy was killed and three others were injured when an allegedly intoxicated driver crashed into a Christmas parade on the Navajo Nation in Arizona on December 22, 2025.

The driver struck four people after entering the parade route at the Kayenta Township Christmas Night Parade in Kayenta Township, located about 300 miles northeast of Phoenix. The crash occurred on Navajo Route 591 as bystanders gathered for the event.

Karson Apodaca was killed in the crash. Among the injured were a pregnant woman, a young child in critical condition, Karson’s mother, her fiance and his grandfather. Property damage was also reported.

The driver, 67-year-old Stanley Begay Jr., was arrested and charged with homicide by vehicle. He is being held in custody with an arraignment scheduled for January 13, 2026.

Under Navajo law, the maximum sentence for homicide by vehicle is one year in prison and a $5,000 fine. By comparison, state law allows for a sentence of over 20 years for vehicular homicide convictions.

The disparity in sentencing has sparked discussion within the community. Lucas Babycos, a lawyer licensed to practice in the Navajo Nation, expressed concerns about the limited penalties available under tribal law.

Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said he is deeply saddened by the incident. In a statement posted on social media, he emphasized the tragedy’s impact on what should have been a joyful occasion.

“This event was meant to bring joy, unity, and holiday spirit to our community—and is a time for families to come together and celebrate. No one should have to experience tragedy during a season meant for love and togetherness,” Nygren said.

The president urged community members to make responsible choices and emphasized the importance of preventing impaired driving across the Navajo Nation.

The FBI and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigation are assisting with the investigation into the crash.

The community held a vigil on Christmas Eve to mourn the loss of young Karson. A GoFundMe campaign established to support the family has raised over $35,000.

The tragedy has deeply affected the community of Kayenta Township, where the Christmas parade serves as a holiday tradition, bringing together families and neighbors in celebration.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about impaired driving on the Navajo Nation and has prompted renewed calls for enhanced safety measures during community gatherings and celebrations. The crash serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that can result from driving under the influence, particularly during events where families and children are present.

As the investigation continues, the community remains focused on supporting the victims’ families while grappling with questions about how to prevent such tragedies in the future. The incident has sparked broader conversations about public safety, appropriate sentencing for vehicular crimes, and the need for increased awareness about the dangers of impaired driving.
