Music Legend Dead After Seizure at 81

Jimmy Cliff, the reggae legend who helped bring Jamaican music to the world through his starring role in the 1972 film “The Harder They Come” and hits like “Many Rivers to Cross,” has died at age 81.

The musician’s wife, Latifa Chambers, announced his death on Instagram on Nov. 24, 2025. “It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” Chambers wrote. “To all his fans around the world, please know that your support was his strength throughout his whole career. He really appreciated each and every fan for their love.”

Born James Chambers on July 30, 1944, in St. James Parish, Jamaica, Cliff achieved his first hit at just 14 years old when “Hurricane Hattie” topped Jamaican charts. The young singer moved to Kingston in 1961 to pursue his musical ambitions, working with producer Leslie Kong at Beverley’s Records. His early success in Jamaica caught the attention of Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, who signed him to the label and helped launch his international career.

Cliff’s role in reggae history extends beyond his own recordings. He played a pivotal part in connecting other future legends to the music industry, notably introducing Bob Marley to producer Kong. This connection helped set Marley on his path to becoming one of reggae’s most iconic figures.

His breakthrough came with “The Harder They Come,” in which Cliff starred as Ivanhoe Martin, a character based on a real Jamaican figure. The film and its soundtrack became cultural phenomena, introducing reggae to mainstream audiences in the United States and beyond. Cliff wrote and performed several songs for the soundtrack, including the title track, “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” and “Many Rivers to Cross.” The soundtrack’s influence was so significant that it was inducted into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2020.

Throughout his career, Cliff recorded numerous hits that crossed over to international charts. His songs “Wonderful World Beautiful People,” “Wild World” (a cover of Cat Stevens’ song), and “Vietnam” achieved worldwide success. Bob Dylan praised “Vietnam” as the best protest song ever written, cementing Cliff’s reputation as both a musical innovator and social commentator.

The musician’s career spanned decades, with continued success into the 1990s when his rendition of “I Can See Clearly Now” appeared on the “Cool Runnings” soundtrack, released in 1993. This song brought his music to a new generation of listeners and demonstrated his enduring appeal.

Cliff’s contributions to music earned him numerous accolades. He won two Grammy Awards, first in 1985 for his album “Cliff Hanger” and again in 2013 for “Rebirth.” His influence was further recognized when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010, becoming only the second Jamaican to receive this honor, alongside Bob Marley.

The Jamaican government recognized his cultural impact by awarding him the Order of Merit in 2003, the nation’s highest honor for achievements in the arts and sciences. His music resonated beyond Jamaica’s shores, with artists like Bruce Springsteen covering his song “Trapped” and incorporating it into concert performances.

Cliff also ventured into television, performing on Saturday Night Live in 1976, helping introduce reggae to American television audiences. His spiritual journey included converting to Islam, reflecting the depth and complexity of his personal life beyond his musical career.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness paid tribute to the artist, acknowledging his role in bringing Jamaican culture to global prominence. Holness recognized how Cliff’s music helped people through difficult times and inspired generations of musicians and fans alike.

Cliff’s influence extended to various genres and artists. He collaborated with major acts including the Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello, Annie Lennox, and Paul Simon. His work demonstrated reggae’s versatility and its ability to blend with other musical styles while maintaining its distinctive character.

The musician is survived by his wife Latifa Chambers and their children, Lilty and Aken. His legacy as one of reggae’s founding fathers and most effective ambassadors remains secure, having helped transform a regional Jamaican sound into a globally recognized and celebrated musical genre.

From his humble beginnings in St. James Parish to international stardom, Cliff’s journey embodied the spirit of perseverance and artistic vision that characterized his most famous songs. His music continues to inspire artists and audiences worldwide, ensuring that his contributions to reggae music and global culture will endure for generations to come.
