Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson stirred significant controversy within the MAGA movement following his announcement on December 7, 2025, at the Doha Forum that he intends to purchase property in Qatar. During an interview with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, the former Fox News host revealed his plans, resulting in immediate backlash from notable conservative figures.
While speaking with the prime minister, Carlson addressed longstanding allegations regarding his relationship with Qatar. “I have been criticized as being a tool of Qatar, and I just want to say, which you already know, I have never taken anything from your country and don’t plan to,” Carlson said. He proceeded to announce his intention to buy a residence in Qatar.
Carlson explained his choice by asserting his freedom as an American citizen. He noted his admiration for Doha’s aesthetics and emphasized his desire to demonstrate his independence. He confirmed he has not accepted financial contributions from Qatar, but acknowledged that he will now be investing in the country through this property purchase.
The announcement triggered a strong response from conservative circles, with Texas Senator Ted Cruz leading the criticism against Carlson. The 54-year-old senator, who has previously disagreed with Carlson over Iran policy, shared an AI-generated image portraying Carlson in an unfavorable light during the Qatar interview. Cruz captioned the image as though it were live footage from the discussion, adding explicit commentary about Carlson.
Cruz had previously labeled Carlson “QatarFirst” when news of his participation in the Doha Forum emerged. The senator’s response included ridiculing a photo posted by Neil Patel, co-founder of Carlson’s Daily Caller, which featured Carlson, Patel, and Donald Trump Jr.
Conservative commentator Laura Loomer also criticized Carlson’s connections to Qatar. She accused him of money laundering and demanded public access to his real estate documents. Loomer, who has previously accused Carlson of promoting Islam and downplaying Islamic terrorism, consistently referred to him as “Tucker Qatarlson.”
The backlash revealed fissures within the conservative movement, as Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene defended Carlson against Cruz’s attacks. Greene criticized Cruz as a “Canadian born Zionist,” accusing him of focusing more on Carlson than on significant issues.
The ongoing conflict between Carlson and Cruz stems from earlier disputes this year. Cruz had criticized Carlson for featuring white supremacist Nick Fuentes on his podcast, challenging Republicans who did not speak out against the guest. Their disagreements further escalated over U.S. foreign policy toward Iran.
In response to the criticism, Carlson reiterated his stance as a free American citizen, asserting his right to travel and engage with anyone without restrictions. He emphasized his independence and denied receiving any financial benefits from Qatar.
The Doha Forum event included other prominent American figures, such as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, billionaire Bill Gates, and Donald Trump Jr. Carlson’s discussion with the Qatari prime minister largely focused on Israel and regional security matters.
The controversy underscores growing divisions within the MAGA movement concerning foreign policy and ideological alignment. Carlson’s engagement with Qatar has alienated some of his conservative allies. Critics argue that his associations with controversial figures signal a shift from conservative tenets.
Despite the backlash, Carlson remains firm in his position, asserting that he acts independently and has not accepted financial compensation from foreign governments. His property purchase is a declaration of his autonomy in making personal decisions, regardless of political pressure from conservative allies.
