TV Star Dies Suddenly at 46

James Ransone, the Baltimore-born actor best known for his portrayal of Ziggy Sobotka in HBO’s critically acclaimed crime drama “The Wire,” died by suicide on Friday, Dec. 19, 2025, in Los Angeles. He was 46 years old.

The Los Angeles medical examiner determined the cause of death as hanging. Ransone’s passing marks the loss of a versatile performer who built a career spanning television, film and horror projects over more than two decades.

James Finley Ransome III became known to television audiences through his role as Chester “Ziggy” Sobotka, a troubled dock worker on “The Wire.” He appeared in 12 episodes during the show’s second season, which focused on the declining state of the American working class through the lens of Baltimore’s port workers. According to Variety, his character’s storyline ended “in a confession to murder and imprisonment,” marking one of the series’ most memorable arcs. The performance showcased Ransone’s ability to bring depth and vulnerability to complex characters struggling with their circumstances.

Born in 1979, Ransone grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, and attended the Carver Center for Arts and Technology in Towson, Maryland. He launched his acting career in 2002 with the drama “Ken Park,” securing his breakthrough role on “The Wire” the following year. The HBO series, which ran from 2002 to 2008, has since been recognized as one of the greatest television dramas ever produced, examining Baltimore’s drug trade and urban decay through multiple perspectives.

Beyond “The Wire,” Ransone demonstrated his range through diverse television work. He played Cpl. Josh Ray Person in the HBO miniseries “Generation Kill,” which chronicled the early stages of the Iraq War through the experiences of a Marine reconnaissance battalion. His television credits also included appearances in “Poker Face,” “Seal Team” and “The First,” showcasing his ability to move between different genres and formats.

Ransone’s career expanded into horror films in 2019 when he took on the role of the adult Eddie Kaspbrak in “It: Chapter Two,” the sequel to the successful Stephen King adaptation. The film brought together the adult versions of characters from the first installment, requiring actors who could capture both the fear and nostalgia of confronting childhood trauma. His performance added emotional weight to the ensemble cast.

His film work continued with appearances in multiple horror and thriller projects. He appeared in “Black Phone 2,” “V/H/S/85” and “Small Engine Repair,” establishing himself as a reliable presence in genre filmmaking. These roles demonstrated his willingness to take on challenging material and work within independent film circles alongside bigger studio productions.

The entertainment industry has long grappled with mental health challenges affecting performers and crew members alike. The pressures of maintaining a career in Hollywood, combined with the emotional demands of certain roles, can create difficult circumstances for actors. While the specific circumstances surrounding Ransone’s death remain private, his passing highlights ongoing concerns about mental health support within the entertainment community.

Ransone’s body of work reflects a commitment to authentic, grounded performances across different mediums. From his early work in independent film to his memorable television roles and horror film appearances, he built a career characterized by versatility and dedication to his craft. His portrayal of working-class characters, particularly Ziggy Sobotka, resonated with audiences who appreciated his ability to bring humanity to flawed individuals.

The actor’s death comes as a shock to colleagues and fans who followed his career from his breakthrough on “The Wire” through his recent film work. His contributions to both prestige television and genre filmmaking leave behind a legacy that spans multiple generations of viewers. For those who watched “The Wire” during its original run or discovered it through streaming platforms, Ransone’s performance remains a standout in a series filled with exceptional acting.

Ransome leaves behind his wife Jamie McPhee and two children, Jack, 6, and Violet, 4.
