In a devastating incident in Vanderbijlpark, South Africa, 14 children lost their lives when a minibus collided with a truck, as confirmed by local authorities. This happened in the Gauteng province, south of Johannesburg, when a private vehicle ferrying students to primary and high schools met with a head-on collision with a truck at around 7 a.m. on January 19, 2026.
Initial reports suggested that 11 students died at the scene. However, after police checked hospitals and the mortuary, it was confirmed that 12 students had died on the spot. The bodies of two more students were found trapped under the vehicle later.
Eyewitnesses stated that the minibus was attempting to overtake other vehicles when it hit the truck. The Toyota Quantum minibus, which was licensed to carry only 14 passengers, was carrying 17 students at the time of the incident. The overloading of the vehicle was confirmed by Provincial police spokesperson Mavela Masondo.
According to Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, the school vehicle was trying to overtake multiple cars when the truck approached. The truck driver tried to swerve to avoid the collision, but his efforts were in vain.
Emergency responders from Gauteng Emergency Services transported five patients to Sebokeng Hospital, while two were taken to Kopanong Hospital for further treatment. The driver of the minibus, who was injured in the mishap, was among those taken to the hospital.
The 22-year-old minibus driver survived the accident and was injured. After his release from the hospital on Monday night, he was taken into custody by Gauteng police and charged with 14 counts of culpable homicide, along with reckless and negligent driving.
Premier Lesufi disclosed that the driver’s Public Driver’s Permit had expired in November 2025, which implies he was not legally permitted to transport students at the time of the accident.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane described the incident as “a really tragic day for us as the department and the province,” and called for more scrutiny of student transportation.
The Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, pointed out that many accidents involving school transport result from driver error. She urged the Department of Transport to ensure that vehicles responsible for transporting schoolchildren are fit for the road.
Describing the accident as “unbearable,” Premier Lesufi called for stricter regulation of the burgeoning private scholar transport sector. This call for increased oversight reflects growing concerns about safety standards in South Africa’s informal school transportation network.
