A 28-year-old elementary school teacher was found dead, covered in snow, in a wooded area of Emporia, Kansas, on Sunday, January 25, 2026, after vanishing during a severe winter storm that brought dangerous cold and heavy snowfall to the region.
Rebecca Rauber was discovered approximately 300 yards south of West 4th Avenue, near where surveillance footage last captured her walking alone in the early hours of Friday, January 23, 2026. The body was located by K-9 Daisy from K-9 Search and Rescue Kansas after an intensive search involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
Emporia Police Chief Edward Owens confirmed the grim discovery to reporters. “Not the outcome that we had all hoped and prayed for, but our thoughts and prayers are with that family,” Owens said. “Just wish we could have found her a little sooner.”
Police believe Rauber died from hypothermia early in her disappearance, likely during the initial hours after she left Town Royal bar on foot without her purse, phone or jacket. The teacher was last seen leaving the establishment at 405 Commercial Street around 11:30 p.m. on Friday.
Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators provided critical clues to Rauber’s movements. Video captured her walking west on West 5th Avenue, then showed her walking north on Neosho Street from West 5th Avenue at approximately 11:37 p.m. on Friday, January 23. Additional footage discovered during the investigation showed Rauber in the 700 block of West 4th Avenue at approximately 11:44 p.m. on January 23.
The search for Rauber began immediately after she was reported missing. Officers from the Emporia Police Department utilized business surveillance cameras throughout the downtown area and coordinated efforts with the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.
The timing of Rauber’s disappearance coincided with a heavy snowstorm that struck the area on Saturday, January 24, creating treacherous conditions. Temperatures plummeted to 3 degrees with wind chills reaching minus 13, creating life-threatening exposure risks for anyone caught outdoors without proper protection.
The investigation remains ongoing, with an autopsy scheduled to determine the official cause and a more accurate time of death. Rauber’s family has been notified of the discovery.
Rauber served as a second-grade teacher at Riverside Elementary in the USD 253 Emporia Public Schools district. Her educational background included recent completion of a master’s degree from Emporia State University in spring 2025, as well as two bachelor’s degrees from the same institution in 2020.
The school district released a statement expressing profound grief over the loss. “Counselors will be available for students and staff as the school community processes the tragedy,” the statement read.
The Emporia Police Department expressed gratitude for the extensive assistance provided during the search operation. Multiple agencies dedicated significant manpower and resources in hopes of a positive outcome. The coordinated effort involved ground searches, K-9 units, and a systematic review of surveillance footage from businesses and residences throughout the search area.
The circumstances of Rauber’s departure from the bar without essential items like her phone and jacket raise questions about her condition and decision-making at the time.
Surveillance technology proved crucial in piecing together Rauber’s final movements, allowing investigators to narrow their search area. Modern investigations increasingly rely on such footage from both commercial establishments and private residences equipped with security cameras. Police had requested that residents review their home surveillance systems for any footage from Friday night.
The Town Royal bar sits in the 400 block of Commercial Street. The wooded area where she was ultimately discovered lies just south of that area, an area that may have offered some shelter from the wind but also isolated her from potential assistance.
As the investigation continues, authorities will work to establish a complete timeline of events and determine whether any additional factors contributed to the tragedy. The autopsy results will provide medical confirmation of the cause of death and help establish when Rauber succumbed to the extreme cold.
