Popular Soap Actor Dead At 92

Derek Martin, the British actor best known for portraying taxi driver Charlie Slater on the long-running BBC soap opera EastEnders, has died aged 92.

Martin died on Saturday, January 10, 2026, according to his agent Sharon Henry, marking the end of an acting career that spanned over 50 years and made him a beloved figure in British television.

The actor is survived by his two sons, David and Jonathan, who released a statement through Henry expressing their grief. “Derek wasn’t just a dad to us, he was a friend and supported us through our highs and lows,” they said. “He never stopped learning, he loved meeting people and was always generous with his time. We both miss him terribly.”

Martin became a household name through his portrayal of Charlie Slater on EastEnders, a role he played from 2000 to 2011 before making guest appearances in 2013 and 2016. The character arrived in the fictional London borough of Walford with his four daughters Lynne Slater, Kat Slater, Little Mo Morgan and Zoe Slater, along with his mother-in-law Mo Harris.

The Slater family quickly became one of the soap’s most iconic clans, with Charlie serving as the patriarch of the predominantly female household. His character navigated numerous dramatic storylines over the years, cementing his place in the hearts of viewers across Britain.

In 2010, Martin stepped back from regular appearances on the show, though he returned for guest spots in subsequent years. His character died of a heart attack in 2016, providing a poignant end to Charlie Slater’s journey.

EastEnders released a statement of condolence following news of Martin’s death, celebrating both the actor and his memorable character. The show’s tribute highlighted how Martin’s portrayal had resonated with audiences from the moment Charlie Slater first appeared on screen.

Michelle Ryan, who played Zoe Slater on the soap, paid tribute on Instagram following Martin’s death. Ryan had returned to EastEnders in June 2025 after a lengthy absence from the show.

Born in Bow, East London, in April 1933, Martin took an unconventional path to his acting career. He left his job at Smithfield Meat Market in 1962, having previously completed National Service in the Royal Air Force. Before finding his calling in entertainment, he worked as a professional gambler and in motor racing, among other occupations.

Martin’s entry into show business began behind the scenes rather than in front of the camera. He started as a stuntman in the science fiction series Doctor Who, performing physically demanding work that capitalized on his athleticism and fearlessness. However, after breaking his collarbone while filming Elizabeth R in 1971, he transitioned from stunt work to acting roles.

His first major breakthrough came with the BBC series Law & Order in 1978. The role showcased Martin’s ability to portray complex, working-class characters with authenticity and depth.

Throughout the 1980s and beyond, Martin became a familiar face on British television, appearing in numerous popular series. He starred in King and Castle from 1985 to 1988, playing a recurring character that further established his reputation as a reliable character actor.

His television credits also included appearances in The Sweeney, The Bill, and Doctor Who, demonstrating his versatility across different genres and formats. These roles helped build the foundation for what would become a distinguished career in British entertainment.

Sharon Henry, Martin’s agent, remembered him as “a truly authentic working-class voice in British television and film.” In her statement confirming his death, she emphasized his dedication to his craft and the privilege of working with him throughout his career.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Martin was known for his charitable work as a member of the Grand Order of Water Rats charity, an entertainment fraternity that supports those in need within the performing arts community. His involvement reflected his commitment to giving back to the industry that had given him so much.

Martin’s portrayal of Charlie Slater resonated with audiences because it captured the essence of a devoted family man navigating life’s challenges with humor and grace. The character’s journey from his arrival in Walford in 2000 through his final appearance in 2016 provided viewers with storylines that were both entertaining and emotionally resonant.

The actor’s ability to bring warmth and authenticity to the role made Charlie Slater more than just a supporting character. He became the emotional anchor for one of EastEnders‘ most popular family units, with viewers invested in his relationships with his daughters and the various trials and tribulations that befell the Slater clan.

Martin’s career trajectory exemplified the opportunities available in British television for talented performers willing to hone their craft across different mediums. From his early days as a stuntman to his status as a soap opera icon, he demonstrated the value of persistence and dedication in the competitive world of entertainment.

His work helped define an era of British soap opera storytelling, where working-class characters and their struggles took center stage. The authenticity he brought to these roles stemmed in part from his own East London upbringing and varied life experiences before entering the acting profession.

The news of Martin’s death prompted an outpouring of affection from fans and colleagues who remembered him not only for his on-screen work but also for his kindness and professionalism off-camera. His reputation as a generous colleague who was always willing to share advice and stories made him a beloved figure within the British television industry.

The actor’s family requested privacy during this difficult time as they mourn the loss of a father, friend, and supporter. His sons’ statement emphasized the personal qualities that made him special beyond his public persona—his curiosity, generosity, and unwavering support for those he loved.

As tributes continue to pour in from across the entertainment industry, Martin’s impact on British television remains clear. His work on EastEnders alone touched millions of viewers over more than a decade, creating memorable moments that will continue to be cherished by fans of the long-running soap opera.
