Angelina Jolie is preparing to leave Los Angeles for good, planning an overseas move once her youngest children become adults this summer. The actress and humanitarian has openly stated she no longer feels connected to the United States, offering sharp criticism of the country’s current direction.
The 50-year-old star has long intended to leave Los Angeles but stayed due to custody obligations with ex-husband Brad Pitt. Those responsibilities change when her twins, Vivienne and Knox, turn 18 on July 12, marking the moment she can finally make the international move she has contemplated for years.
A source stated that Jolie never wanted to be a full-time Los Angeles resident and remained only because of the custody arrangement with Pitt. With her youngest children nearing adulthood, she is exploring potential destinations abroad and is expected to be very relieved once she is able to leave Los Angeles.
Her plans to move include preparing to sell her Los Angeles home, a landmark property she bought in 2017 for $24.5 million. The expansive estate stretches 11,000 square feet with six bedrooms and 10 bathrooms, standing as one of the city’s most notable properties.
The home has deep Hollywood roots. Director Cecil B. DeMille purchased the property in 1916 and lived there for nearly 40 years until his death in 1959. Charlie Chaplin lived in the neighboring residence, which DeMille later acquired and merged with the original estate, forming the iconic compound that exists today.
While speaking at the San Sebastián Film Festival in Spain in September 2024, Jolie expressed her discontent with the state of the nation. She noted that although she loves the United States, she no longer recognizes it as it is now.
During the event, Jolie further described her global outlook, saying her perspective is balanced, unified, and international. She warned that anything anywhere that suppresses or restricts personal expression and freedom is extremely dangerous.
Jolie has led an international lifestyle for much of her career, with family and friends around the world. Her discomfort with Los Angeles extends beyond political issues and touches on her concerns about the overall quality of life for her six children. In a 2024 interview, she said that when raising a large family, privacy, peace, and safety become essential.
Jolie confirmed that after relocating, she plans to spend significant time in Cambodia and will visit family members wherever they live. Cambodia holds special meaning to her, as she adopted her oldest son, Maddox, there in 2002.
Jolie explained that Cambodia was the place that made her aware of refugees and marked the beginning of her journey into motherhood.
The actress recalled a moment in 2001, while taking part in a school program in Samlout, when she was playing with a child and suddenly felt that her son was somehow there. A few months later, she met Maddox at an orphanage. Jolie considers Cambodia her true home in her heart.
In 2003, Jolie purchased a home in Cambodia, deepening her bond with the country that profoundly influenced her life and career. During her relationship with Pitt, she also adopted Zahara and Pax, both later adopted by Pitt as well. They also share three biological children: Shiloh, Vivienne, and Knox.
Jolie and Pitt finalized their divorce in December 2024, ending an eight-year legal battle following their 2016 separation.
The actress has been outspoken about U.S. policy in the past. Her humanitarian work has strengthened her global perspective as she has traveled extensively to conflict zones and refugee camps, experiences she credits with shaping her sense of shared humanity.
When discussing adoption, Jolie has repeatedly said her choices stemmed from personal conviction, not a desire to shape her public image. She explained that as a child, she already felt drawn to adoption because she knew there were children without parents. She does not view adoption as a sacrifice but as a gift, believing that everyone involved is fortunate.
The actress has reflected on how her diverse family offers perspectives she and Pitt took decades to understand. Looking at Shiloh, who resembles both parents at that age, Jolie wondered how much her children know by age six that took her and Pitt far longer to learn. She has said she aims to give her children the childhood she always wished for.
With her twins nearing adulthood, Jolie’s long-planned move abroad is finally becoming a reality. Sources say she is making preparations to finish minor updates to her historic Los Angeles home before listing it. Her relocation marks more than a move—it reflects a profound shift in how one of Hollywood’s most prominent figures intends to live.
Beyond Cambodia, Jolie is also considering destinations in Europe and New York as she shapes her life after Los Angeles. Her choices reflect her belief that true privacy, peace, and safety for children require a different environment than what Los Angeles currently provides.
As July approaches, Jolie seems poised to close her Los Angeles chapter for good. The move will end a long-standing residence maintained mostly because of legal constraints, allowing her to embrace the globally oriented life she has long envisioned for herself and her family.
