On January 28, Jimmy Kimmel, host of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, responded to remarks made by President Donald Trump concerning Representative Ilhan Omar’s recent incident at a town hall event in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
At the event, Rep. Omar was assaulted by a man who sprayed her with a substance later identified as apple cider vinegar. Instead of condemning the incident, President Trump criticized the Democratic congresswoman.
Trump accused Omar of being a fraud and implied she orchestrated the attack herself, stating, “knowing her.”
Kimmel took the opportunity during his January 28 monologue to address Trump’s remarks, criticizing them as absurd. He then proceeded to make a joke about the President, questioning who might be spraying Trump.
To illustrate his point, Kimmel presented a photograph of Trump’s distinctly orange facial complexion, taken aboard Air Force One while travelling to Joint Base Andrews, Maryland in September. The photo was credited to Julia Demaree Nikhinson of the Associated Press.
This exchange is one of many in the ongoing conflict between Trump and Kimmel, which has heightened over the past months. In November, Trump took to Truth Social in the early hours to call for Kimmel’s dismissal from his show, labeling him a talentless individual with poor ratings.
On November 21, Kimmel replied to Trump’s late-night social media criticism. He expressed gratitude towards Trump for watching his show live rather than on YouTube, highlighting that Trump’s post was made shortly after the show ended on the East Coast.
Kimmel mentioned that Trump watches his show live instead of on YouTube, and noted that the president often criticizes him every five weeks. He described Trump as a snowflake and mentioned that he lost track of the number of times Trump has attempted to get him fired.
In his response, Kimmel concluded by addressing Trump as “quiet piggy”, a phrase Trump recently used to silence a reporter during a media session.
This incident is part of a larger trend of Trump attacking late-night comedians. He has recently pressured NBC to dismiss Seth Meyers. His criticisms have extended beyond late-night show hosts to include news correspondents and network executives.
Kimmel suggested during his monologue that he would leave his show when Trump leaves the public sphere, alluding to the possibility of them departing together like Butch Cassidy and the Suntan (Sundance) Kid. This reference to the classic Western film also pointed out Trump’s unique appearance.
The monologue that apparently instigated Trump’s most recent criticism was heavily focused on the Epstein files. Kimmel’s show discussed Jeffrey Epstein, concentrating on documents that have become politically controversial. The House voted 427-1 to release additional materials related to this case, marking one of the most decisive votes in contemporary congressional history.
On Friday, January 30, the Justice Department released millions of documents related to the Epstein case.
