Top Chef Killed in Motorcycle Accident

A Sydney-based chef was killed in a motorcycle accident in Bali in early February, leading to an outpouring of grief from friends and colleagues who remembered his enthusiasm and spirit.

Davide Vulpis had been traveling with friends on the Indonesian island when the crash occurred. Born in Terlizzi, Italy, he had been living in Sydney for at least a year and working at Cibaria Italian restaurant inside the Manly Pacific Hotel on the Northern Beaches.

His brother, Christian Vulpis, launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover cremation costs in Bali and return Davide’s ashes to Italy. The fundraiser characterized the tragedy as both sudden and devastating.

Christian noted that bringing Davide home is deeply meaningful to the family. The campaign met its $12,000 target within hours, surpassing $11,000 before being paused. The funds will go toward cremation, legal, and administrative costs. Vulpis will be cremated in Bali, and his remains will be transported back to Italy.

Before moving to Sydney, Vulpis worked in Ibiza as head chef at Aparthotel Playasol Mogambo and also did private catering on the island. His last Instagram post featured him preparing steak at the Manly restaurant with the caption “Chef life.”

Other recent posts highlighted his visits to Circular Quay’s famous landmarks and a holiday in Thailand. These posts captured moments from his Southeast Asian travels in the weeks before he died.

Friends shared tributes online after learning of his death. One woman, who described herself as his teacher, wrote about the pain of unexpectedly losing a student, even recalling the 10 cups of coffee he drank during class.

Another friend called him a wonderful uncle and mentioned he served as best man at a wedding, saying his presence left a lasting impression on everyone around him.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade stated they were not offering consular support because Vulpis was not an Australian citizen. A spokesperson confirmed the department had no consular involvement in the situation.

Bali continues to attract tourists from Australia and beyond, known for its beaches, culture, and relatively low travel costs. Millions visit the island each year, and many choose to rent scooters or motorcycles to get around. Road accidents involving tourists on two-wheeled vehicles are common due to varying road conditions and unfamiliar traffic norms.

Indonesian authorities have been working to improve road safety in tourist spots, though enforcement varies. Many accidents involve riders lacking proper licenses or experience with motorcycles in tropical environments. Although helmet use is required by law, it is not always followed, and some areas have less-developed road infrastructure compared to Western countries.

The crash happened just weeks after another Australian died in a scooter accident nearby. Bryce Alexander Black, 33, from the New South Wales Central Coast, was riding a scooter in North Kuta when he collided head-on with a car on December 28. His partner, Samantha Baillie, also 33, was critically injured.

Sydney’s northern beaches culinary community has lost a committed chef who brought Mediterranean expertise to local kitchens. Cibaria Italian restaurant specializes in classic Italian dishes in a beachfront setting, emphasizing authentic techniques and fresh ingredients—values Vulpis carried from his European training.

Italian cuisine maintains a strong presence in Sydney, with many Italian chefs contributing to the city’s diverse food culture. Numerous Italian nationals work in Australia’s hospitality sector, bringing traditions from their regions to restaurants nationwide. The northern beaches area, where Vulpis worked, is known for its high-quality dining options for both residents and visitors.

Vulpis’ journey from Terlizzi to Ibiza and then to Sydney reflects the global nature of the culinary world, where chefs frequently move abroad to gain experience and share their talents. His international career exposed him to a variety of cooking styles and restaurant environments, which he carried into his role in Sydney.

The swift support for the fundraiser, which reached its goal in mere hours, highlights the deep impact Vulpis had on his community. Friends, colleagues, and former students donated to help his family return him to Italy for his final arrangements.
