Baseball Legend Has Died at 81

Wayne Granger, a former Major League Baseball pitcher and Cincinnati Reds Hall of Famer who played a key role in leading the team to the 1970 World Series during the early Big Red Machine era, has died at 81.

Granger died on February 25, 2026, marking the passing of one of baseball’s most dependable relief pitchers of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The National Baseball Hall of Fame confirmed his death and honored him as a pitcher who helped redefine bullpen roles.

The right-handed sinkerball specialist put together a strong nine-year MLB career, appearing in 451 games and finishing with a 35-35 record, 108 saves, and a 3.14 ERA. Over 638 2/3 innings, Granger struck out 303 hitters while serving almost entirely as a reliever.

His peak years came in Cincinnati between 1969 and 1971, when he emerged as one of the league’s top closers. In 1969, he became the first pitcher in National League history to take the mound in 90 games in a single season—a workload nearly unimaginable today. That year, he logged 144 2/3 innings and posted 27 saves.

In 1970, Granger topped Major League Baseball with a career-best 35 saves—then the MLB single-season record. His performance helped drive the Reds to the World Series, where they ultimately lost to the Baltimore Orioles in five games. Although he struggled in the Series, his regular-season excellence earned him consecutive Sporting News Fireman of the Year awards.

Throughout his career, Granger suited up for numerous teams in both leagues. His stops included the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Houston Astros, and Montreal Expos, reflecting his reliability and endurance as a bullpen anchor.

His 1982 induction into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame honored his major contributions during the team’s formative Big Red Machine years. He became only the second reliever in franchise history to receive that distinction.

Baseball has endured a particularly difficult start to 2026, with multiple former players passing away in recent weeks. Shortly before Granger’s death, the sport mourned another iconic reliever: former Pittsburgh Pirates closer Dave Giusti, who died on January 11 at age 86. Giusti topped the National League with 30 saves in 1971 and played a crucial role in the Pirates’ World Series triumph. “He was a vital member of our World Series-winning team in 1971,” Pirates chairman Bob Nutting said.

The baseball world also grieved the loss of former Kansas City Royals outfielder Terrance Gore, who died at 34 due to complications following a routine medical procedure on February 6.

Granger’s passing at 81 symbolizes the end of an era when relievers routinely handled lengthy outings and pitched far more often than today’s specialized closers. His 90-game season in 1969 and capacity to perform under heavy workloads illustrated the toughness and endurance needed to excel during a pivotal time in the evolution of relief pitching.

As baseball continues to honor its past while looking ahead, the deaths of Granger, Giusti, and Gore remind fans of the game’s deep history and the players who dedicated their lives to a sport cherished across generations.
