Broadway Actress Gone at 97

Sondra Lee, the petite Broadway powerhouse who first brought to life the iconic character of Tiger Lily in “Peter Pan” and originated Minnie Fay in “Hello, Dolly!”, passed away on Monday, February 23, 2026, of natural causes in her New York City home. She was 97.

The news was shared by Rev. Joshua Ellis, a onetime Broadway press agent turned Interspiritual minister. Ellis also corrected a frequently repeated mistake regarding Lee’s birth year. She was born Sondra Lee Gash on September 30, 1928, in Newark, New Jersey—not 1930, as many online sources have inaccurately claimed.

“Sondra hoped to fix the mistake herself but never managed to,” Ellis explained. “But she did request that this obituary release finally put the truth on record.”

Standing only 4 feet 10½ inches tall, Lee turned what some considered a disadvantage into a defining strength. Her stature enabled her, at age 26, to convincingly portray Tiger Lily, the Native American princess, in the 1954 Broadway staging of “Peter Pan” alongside Mary Martin. When NBC broadcast the show as the first full-length Broadway production filmed for color TV on March 7, 1955, a then-unprecedented 65 million viewers watched Lee inhabit the role. She returned for NBC’s 1956 and 1960 telecasts.

Lee’s entry into Broadway began with a bold move in 1947. Outside the Shubert Theater in NewYork, she approached choreographer Jerome Robbins about auditioning for “High Button Shoes.” When Robbins told her auditions had closed, Lee used quick humor—including a quip about being rejected from another show for her height—to change his mind. “Don’t go home and commit suicide,” Robbins said. “Come over here and dance for me.”

That serendipitous moment launched her Broadway career and began a lifelong friendship with Robbins, who later cast her in “Peter Pan.”

In 1964, Lee created another standout character: Minnie Fay, the spirited young shop assistant in “Hello, Dolly!” at the St. James Theatre. Director Gower Champion selected her for the role, embracing his concept of an ensemble filled with vibrant, memorable performers who could play brilliantly off one another. During her time in the production, she performed opposite several stars portraying Dolly Levi, including Carol Channing, Ginger Rogers, Betty Grable, and Martha Raye. Lee later said Raye was her favorite, and the two toured in the musical with the USO during the Vietnam War.

Born to David and Belle Gash, Lee was a delicate child who received growth hormones because of her size. She immersed herself in ballet, studying at Studio 61 in Carnegie Hall under Vera Nemtchinova and Edward Caton, encouraged by prima ballerina Alexandra Danilova.

As a teenager, Lee joined the YMHA Players in Newark and performed in Catskills revues, forming close bonds with comedians such as Buddy Hackett, Red Buttons, Jack Carter, and Joey Adams. After moving to New York City, she lived in a West 58th Street boarding house alongside Wally Cox, Maureen Stapleton, and a young Marlon Brando, who became a lifelong friend.

Lee’s career expanded to Europe in 1957 when she toured with Roland Petit’s La Revue des Ballets de Paris featuring Zizi Jeanmaire. She later performed with Robbins’ Ballets: U.S.A. in Spoleto, Florence, Trieste, and at the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair. Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini saw her perform in Italy and cast her as an American ballerina in the final party sequence of “La Dolce Vita” (1960).

Across her nine-decade career, Lee continually reinvented herself—working as a dancer, actor, teacher, author, stage director, playwright, film and theater advisor, and even a painter. She mentored a remarkable roster of performers, including Jane Fonda, Sally Field, Dustin Hoffman, Natalia Makarova, John Malkovich, Amy Adams, Matt Dillon, Cyndi Lauper, and Joan Jett. She also consulted on more than a dozen films, such as “Places in the Heart,” “The Last of the Mohicans,” and “The Morning After.”

Lee taught at New York University and the Stella Adler Conservatory. In 1965, she spent a month training performers in the Metropolitan Opera’s touring company on how to convincingly portray onstage death. Her 2009 memoir, “I’ve Slept with Everybody,” chronicled her extraordinary life and friendships with Hollywood greats. At the time of her passing, she was writing a second book, “Snapshots Redux.” Even in her mid-90s, she continued to mentor and advise emerging artists across theater and film.

Her last public appearance occurred on June 23, 2025, at Carnegie Hall during Transport Group’s “Hello, Dolly, In Concert.” As the final surviving original principal from the 1964 cast, Lee received one last standing ovation from an audience honoring her enduring legacy in American theater.
