Fox News Host Warns VP Vance

Vice President JD Vance encountered an unexpected dose of reality on what was expected to be friendly ground on Feb. 25, 2026, when Fox News anchor Bill Hemmer confronted him with grim economic polling that signals serious challenges for the Trump administration ahead of the midterm elections.

The 41-year-old vice president appeared on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom” to discuss President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address delivered the previous night.

Hemmer, 61, carefully laid out the bleak numbers. A Fox News poll from Jan. 23-26 found that only 40 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the economy, while a striking 59 percent disapprove. A Wall Street Journal poll from the same timeframe showed 45 percent approval and 54 percent disapproval. A Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos survey conducted Feb. 12-17 showed nearly identical results, with 41 percent approval and 57 percent disapproval.

The Fox host didn’t shy away from the stakes for the administration. “You’ve got nine months to turn it around,” Hemmer told Vance, cautioning that the economy could be “the issue that might clip” Republicans heading toward the midterms.

For a moment, Vance admitted the scale of the challenge. “In some ways, we are pushing a car uphill,” he said. But that acknowledgment was brief, as Vance quickly shifted to blaming former President Joe Biden for Americans’ economic frustrations, describing the current conditions as an inherited crisis. He listed what he called Biden-era failures, including high peacetime debt and “skyrocketing inflation.”

Despite the poor polling, Vance maintained that improvements are coming. He asserted that Americans have gained $1,200 in take-home pay under Trump, contrasting that with what he described as $3,000 in losses under Biden. He also said the upcoming tax season would bring “massive tax refunds” due to the administration’s policy of exempting tips, overtime, and Social Security from taxation.

Trump struck a similarly upbeat tone during his Feb. 24 State of the Union address—now the longest in at least six decades at around an hour and 48 minutes. The 79-year-old president claimed that “inflation is plummeting, incomes are rising fast, the roaring economy is roaring like never before,” even as he blamed Democrats for economic setbacks.

The celebratory speech came at a precarious moment for Trump. NBC News reported that Americans have lost confidence in him on economic issues for the first time in his political career, creating uncertainty for Republicans as the midterms approach. The address took place during a partial government shutdown—the first State of the Union ever delivered under these conditions—after funding for the Department of Homeland Security expired.

The president’s rosy outlook has not translated into electoral victories. While Trump spoke, Democrats won three special elections for state House seats in Pennsylvania and Maine, highlighting the stiff political headwinds Republicans face. In Pennsylvania, Democrats Ana Tiburcio and Jennifer Mazzocco won in the 22nd and 42nd districts, maintaining their narrow 102-98 majority. In Maine, Democrat Scott Harriman defeated Republican Janet Beaudoin to hold the 94th district.

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee called the results a clear warning for Republicans. Since Trump took office, Democrats have gained 26 state legislative seats while Republicans have gained none—a stark measure of grassroots momentum heading into the midterms.

Vance tried to highlight positive signs in manufacturing, claiming that “trillions and trillions of dollars” in investment are flowing into the U.S. to build new factories. He said the construction jobs from these projects would soon show up in employment data, followed by manufacturing jobs once the plants are operational.

“We’re absolutely pushing that car uphill, but here is the good news, Bill. I think we’re about to get over the hump,” Vance said, urging Americans who are dissatisfied to remain patient.

The exchange marked a rare moment when a Fox News anchor challenged a Trump administration official with tough statistics rather than offering the network’s usual friendly platform. Hemmer’s direct line of questioning underscored the seriousness of the administration’s economic credibility problem as the midterms draw closer.

With nine months left before voters weigh in, the Trump administration is under growing pressure to turn its optimistic economic narrative into tangible improvements that resonate with a skeptical public. Whether Americans accept the argument that they simply need more time to clean up an “inherited mess” will be answered at the ballot box in November.
