Melania Under Fire for Movie Promoting Amid War

First Lady Melania Trump sparked fierce criticism this week after promoting her new documentary on social media while the United States wages military operations against Iran. The 55-year-old announced on X that her film “Melania” had launched on Amazon Prime, prompting immediate backlash from critics who accused her of tone-deaf self-promotion during wartime.

“EXCITING NEWS! As planned, my new film MELANIA is launching on Prime following its record-breaking theatrical run,” Trump wrote in her March 9 post. “Now you can gain unprecedented access to my historical journey, and view the never-before-seen footage, all from the comfort of your own home. Enjoy!”

The timing drew swift condemnation. President Donald Trump continues military operations against Iran targeting the country’s nuclear program and naval capabilities, following strikes that reportedly killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader since 1989. Iran has launched retaliatory attacks on U.S. and Israeli airbases in an escalating conflict.

Liberal pundit Art Candee captured the mood of critics: “We’re in a war and you’re shamelessly self-promoting?” Anti-Taliban activist Eliza delivered an even sharper rebuke, writing that Americans “can’t afford s***” while the first lady promotes her film during a bombing campaign.

Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki criticized Trump’s recent appearance at a U.N. Security Council meeting focused on children in conflict zones, which occurred just two days after the Iran conflict began and after more than 160 girls were killed in a strike on an Iranian school.

“There she was presiding over the meeting like nothing had happened,” Psaki said on MS NOW. “Like she was some sort of substantive contributor to the administration, and without any seeming reference in her mind to the fact that there was a war her husband started two days ago that had literally killed children.”

The documentary, directed by Brett Ratner, follows 20 days leading up to the Trump family’s return to the White House from the first lady’s perspective. The film has sharply divided audiences and critics, earning a 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes while receiving just an 11% rating from professional reviewers — the biggest critic-audience split in the site’s history. The Telegraph dismissed it as “North Korea-style propaganda with a dash of Ralph Lauren,” while The Guardian awarded it zero stars.

The $40 million production, which cost an additional $35 million to market, earned $7 million during its opening weekend at the box office. In the United Kingdom, the film grossed a mere £32,974 ($44,960) in its opening weekend across 155 cinemas, finishing 29th at the box office.

Adding to the film’s troubled rollout, Amazon pulled “Melania” from the Lake Theater & Café in Lake Oswego, Oregon, after the theater’s marquee mocked the documentary. General manager Jordan Perry posted messages including “Does Melania wear Prada? Find out Friday” and “To defeat your enemy, you must know them. Melania starts Friday.”

Perry told the Oregonian that Amazon “was not happy” with his marketing approach. After the cancellation, the theater’s marquee read: “Amazon called. Our marquee made them mad. All Melania showings canceled. Show your support at Whole Foods instead.”

This isn’t the first time the first lady has faced accusations of inappropriate promotion. Earlier in February, Trump fired back at a reporter who suggested she used an event honoring freed hostages as an opportunity to promote the documentary.

President Trump has defended the military operations, stating in a Truth Social video that the objective is “to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime, a vicious group of very hard terrible people.” He added that Iran’s activities “directly endanger the United States, our troops, our bases overseas and our allies throughout the world.”

As the Iran conflict shows no signs of immediate resolution, the first lady’s promotional activities will likely continue drawing scrutiny from critics who view the administration as disconnected from public concerns during a period of international crisis.
