First Lady Melania Trump made an unforgettable entrance at the White House on Wednesday, striding into the East Room alongside a sleek black-and-white humanoid robot as John Williams’ soaring “The Flight to Neverland” filled the historic chamber. The stunning visual marked the debut of advanced robotics at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue—and the first time a humanoid robot has addressed an audience in the White House.
The theatrical presentation occurred during the second day of Mrs. Trump’s Fostering the Future Together Global Coalition Summit, which brought together first spouses and dignitaries from 45 nations to discuss artificial intelligence, education technology, and child safety online. The robot, known as Figure 03, walked down the red carpet with fluid mechanical precision as Williams’ iconic score from the 1991 film “Hook” played through the sound system.
The machine then delivered its own speech. “Thank you, First Lady Melania Trump, for inviting me to the White House,” the robot said in a female voice. “I’m Figure 03, a humanoid built for the United States of America.” The robot offered greetings in ten languages before walking back down the carpet to applause.
Mrs. Trump beamed at her mechanical guest. “It’s fair to state: you are my first American-made humanoid guest in the White House,” she told the robot. The 5-foot-8-inch, 135-pound Figure 03 was developed by Figure AI, a robotics startup based in Sunnyvale, California. CEO Brett Adcock celebrated the moment on social media, calling it historic. The company introduced Figure 03 in October 2025 as its third-generation humanoid robot, designed for household tasks including loading dishwashers, doing laundry, and folding clothes.
The choice of Williams’ music proved particularly fitting for an event showcasing futuristic technology. The legendary composer, who turned 94 in February, has scored some of cinema’s most memorable depictions of wonder and adventure. “The Flight to Neverland” appears on Gustavo Dudamel’s acclaimed 2019 recording with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, “Celebrating John Williams,” which captured the piece during performances at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Williams’ career spans decades of groundbreaking film scores, from “Jaws” in 1975 and “Star Wars” in 1977 to “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” “Jurassic Park,” and “Schindler’s List.” His longtime collaboration with director Steven Spielberg began in 1974 with “The Sugarland Express” and has produced some of Hollywood’s most recognizable musical themes across nearly 30 films together.
The First Lady’s robot-assisted entrance comes as the Trump administration has emphasized American leadership in artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing. President Trump has repeatedly called for the United States to dominate the global AI race, particularly in competition with Chinese technology firms. The summit featured officials from nine countries presenting national strategies for integrating technology into education systems.
Williams’ musical legacy extends far beyond film scores. In a September 1985 interview, the composer discussed his work on an orchestral suite called “The Mission,” which includes theme music for “NBC Nightly News” and “Meet the Press.” He described composing music for news as a “daunting challenge” due to the need to convey gravity and authority while remaining adaptable to any breaking story.
The composer’s early career included work on 1960s television series for producer Irwin Allen, including “Lost in Space,” “The Time Tunnel,” and “Land of the Giants.” He also worked as a studio pianist alongside distinguished composers including Henry Mancini, Alfred Newman, and Elmer Bernstein before transitioning to full-time composition. His television work earned him Emmy Awards and demonstrated the orchestral sophistication that would later define his film career.
Williams’ film work with Spielberg transformed both their careers and the landscape of movie music. The director has credited Williams with changing how he sees his own films, describing their partnership as one where the composer interprets rather than merely accompanies the visuals. Together they created the sounds of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” the Indiana Jones franchise, “Saving Private Ryan,” and numerous other classics. Williams is currently scoring Spielberg’s upcoming UFO film, marking their 30th cinematic collaboration.
Figure AI competes with other robotics companies including Boston Dynamics and Tesla in the race to build commercially viable humanoid robots. The company has tested its robots at BMW manufacturing plants and raised over $1.8 billion in funding. Mrs. Trump pitched a vision of humanoid educators in American homes during her summit remarks. “Imagine a humanoid educator named Plato,” she told attendees. “Access to the classical studies is now instantaneous—literature, science, art, philosophy, mathematics, and history.”
The event on Wednesday concluded with Mrs. Trump delivering remarks about American technological innovation while the robot stood nearby. French First Lady Brigitte Macron, Polish First Lady Marta Nawrocka, and First Ladies from Sierra Leone, Morocco, and the United Arab Emirates joined Mrs. Trump in examining the technology. Several foreign dignitaries requested additional information about the robotics on display.
The White House confirmed that the technology showcased at the summit was developed and manufactured within the United States. Whether Figure 03 will make future public appearances remains to be seen—but for one afternoon, the future walked through the East Room to the soaring strains of John Williams.
