Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman has spoken publicly for the first time about her split from country star Keith Urban, telling Variety that she is concentrating on life ahead with her family after nearly 20 years of marriage ended earlier this year.
The 58-year-old filed for divorce on September 30, 2025, citing irreconcilable differences, with reports saying the pair had been living apart since early summer. A Tennessee judge made the split official on January 6, 2026, concluding a marriage that began at the Cardinal Cerretti Memorial Chapel in Sydney in 2006.
“I am, because I’m always going to be moving toward what’s good,” Kidman told Variety when asked how she was doing since the separation. “What I’m grateful for is my family and keeping them as is and moving forward. That’s that. Everything else I don’t discuss out of respect.”
Per the finalized agreement, Kidman received primary custody of their two daughters: Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 15. The parenting arrangement gives Kidman 306 days a year with the children and grants Urban visitation every other weekend. Both parents will share responsibility for major decisions concerning the kids, and neither will pay child or spousal support. Their assets were divided by mutual agreement, according to court filings.
Neither Kidman nor Urban were present at the Nashville court hearing finalizing the divorce. The children will remain in Nashville, where Kidman is the primary residential parent.
Despite the upheaval, Kidman does not intend to leave the Tennessee city she’s called home for nearly two decades. She told Variety that Nashville is central to who she is and important to her daughters, saying she has been “part of the city and community for 20 years.”
Kidman and Urban bought their Nashville estate in 2008 for $3.47 million — a 10,925-square-foot home in the gated Northumberland community, nicknamed the “Queen of Northumberland.” The property, on roughly two acres, includes seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a pool, tennis court, and home theater. According to sources, Kidman chose to stay in the house to provide stability for the girls during the transition.
She has also built strong ties in Nashville, describing close, “ride-or-die” friends there. She lives near longtime friend and “Big Little Lies” co-star Reese Witherspoon — Kidman told Variety the two “live opposite each other” and took a long walk together the morning of the interview. Nashville has also become part of her work life, with her series “Scarpetta” filmed there and streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
This is Kidman’s second divorce; she was previously married to Tom Cruise from 1990 to 2001, and they adopted two children: Isabella, now 32, and Connor, now 31. Kidman wed Urban, an Australian country singer, in 2006 after meeting him at the G’Day USA Gala in Los Angeles in 2005 — it was Urban’s first marriage.
In the Variety interview, Kidman reflected on marrying Cruise at 23. She has previously discussed how young she was when starting a family but kept her focus on the present during this conversation.
Recapping 2025, Kidman admitted it was a tough year personally. “I was quiet. I had other things going on. I was in my shell,” she told Variety. Still, she expressed hope for 2026, saying she would be in “full witch mode” for the upcoming “Practical Magic” sequel with Sandra Bullock, set to release on September 11.
Beyond that sequel, Kidman’s 2026 projects include starring in “Scarpetta” on Prime Video, continuing work on season three of Taylor Sheridan’s “Lioness,” and appearing in a supporting role in the newest horror film from director Osgood Perkins.
Throughout the interview, Kidman stressed her dedication to preserving a united family, saying she is “staying in a place of, ‘We are a family,’ and that’s what we’ll continue to be.”
Kidman shared a photo with her daughters on New Year’s Day, signaling her focus on the future. Reports indicate the children spend considerably more time with Kidman than with Urban, though there is reportedly “no drama” over the custody arrangements.
As part of the settlement, Kidman waived alimony and child support, preserving the financial independence that has marked her long career in Hollywood.
On March 15, Kidman appeared glamorous and radiant as she presented an award at the 2026 Oscars. Kidman hit the red carpet in showgirl style, wearing a custom Chanel gown by Matthieu Blazy, a powder pink silk creation with a bustier embellished with white and gray crystals and black beads, and a peplum waist of beige, pink, nude, and apricot feathers that flowed down onto the skirt.
