Nicholas Brendon, the beloved actor who captured hearts as Xander Harris on the cult television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” has died at age 54. His family announced he passed peacefully in his sleep of natural causes on March 20, 2026.
Brendon starred as the loyal and self-deprecating Xander Harris throughout all seven seasons of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” from 1997 to 2003, serving as the best friend to Sarah Michelle Gellar’s titular vampire slayer. His portrayal of the everyman hero earned him three Saturn Award nominations—two for Best Genre TV Actor in 1998 and 1999, and one for Best Supporting Actor in 2000.
The Los Angeles-born actor brought warmth and humor to a character who resonated deeply with fans as the only member of the core group without supernatural powers. Brendon’s twin brother, Kelly Donovan, stood in as his body double on the series, most notably in the fifth-season episode “The Replacement,” where Xander is split into two versions of himself.
Gellar paid tribute to her former co-star on Instagram by quoting one of Xander’s most poignant monologues from Season 7. “I saw you Nicky,” she added. “I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky.”
Emma Caulfield, who portrayed Xander’s love interest Anya on the show, posted a video tribute with the message: “My heart is heavy. I can’t put into words just how this has hit me. Rest Nicky. Rest. I love you.”
The news arrives just days after Hulu cancelled a planned “Buffy” reboot. On March 14, 2026, Gellar announced on Instagram that the streamer had decided not to move forward with “Buffy: New Sunnydale,” which would have seen her return to the role alongside a new young slayer played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
In 2023, Brendon reflected on the show’s enduring legacy while celebrating the 20th anniversary of its finale, noting that he still met fans nearly every day who felt like the show had just finished filming rather than ended two decades ago.
Beyond “Buffy,” Brendon appeared in numerous television series including “Criminal Minds,” where he had a recurring role as FBI technical analyst Kevin Lynch from 2007 to 2014, as well as “Private Practice” and “Kitchen Confidential.” His film credits included “Psycho Beach Party,” “Big Gay Love,” “Redwood,” and “Coherence.”
The actor faced significant health challenges throughout his life. In 2021, he reportedly experienced paralysis due to a spinal issue, which led to multiple surgeries for cauda equina syndrome, a rare condition affecting movement and bodily functions. In 2022, he was hospitalized for a cardiac incident involving tachycardia and arrhythmia, and in 2023 he revealed he had suffered a heart attack and been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect.
Brendon lived with a stutter and became a passionate advocate as a spokesperson for the Stuttering Foundation of America. He openly discussed his struggles with substance addiction, alcoholism, and mental health issues, appearing on “Dr. Phil” to share his experiences.
His legal troubles included multiple arrests over the years. In 2014, authorities arrested him following a drunken dispute at an Idaho hotel. In 2021, he faced charges of felony prescription fraud in Indiana, with a plea agreement reached in 2022.
Despite these challenges, Brendon’s family emphasized his optimism. “He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was,” his family said.
The family revealed that Brendon had recently found passion in painting and visual art, sharing his work enthusiastically with family, friends, and fans.
His family told The Hollywood Reporter that while Brendon had struggled in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and “was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing.”
Brendon becomes the second member of the “Buffy” cast to die in recent years, following Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Buffy’s sister Dawn Summers and passed away in February 2025 at age 39 from complications of diabetes.
The family concluded their statement with a request for privacy: “Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart.”
