Beloved TV Star Dead at 66

Television and film actress Dee Freeman, known for her role on BET’s “Sistas” and her work on “The Young and the Restless,” died Thursday at age 66 from complications related to stage 4 lung cancer.

Freeman’s family announced her death on Instagram, sharing that she passed away peacefully on April 2, 2026. In their statement, the family described her cancer battle as “brave and fearless” and thanked supporters who rallied behind her during her illness. They noted she was “blown away” by the outpouring of care.

The actress most recently starred in seasons nine and 10 of Tyler Perry’s “Sistas,” portraying Valerie Barnes, the mother of KJ Smith Black’s character Andi Barnes. She had been invited to return for the show’s 11th season before her death. Freeman made her final onscreen appearance in January.

Freeman’s publicist, Desirae L. Benson, honored her client’s memory with a statement that captured the actress’s enduring spirit: “Dee had a quiet power that commanded respect without ever needing to demand it.”

Born in Louisiana on June 6, 1959, Freeman took an unconventional path to her acting career. After high school, she joined the United States Marine Corps reportedly on a dare and served six years in the military. That experience shaped her discipline and resilience—qualities that would define both her personal life and professional work.

Following her military service, Freeman launched her career in the arts, starting with theater before transitioning to film and television. She appeared in more than 80 stage productions over a career spanning three decades.

Freeman made her television debut in 1995 on an episode of ABC’s “Coach.” She went on to work in Los Angeles for more than two decades, building an impressive resume of guest appearances on popular shows including “Seinfeld,” “ER,” “The X-Files,” “Dexter,” “Shameless,” and “NCIS: Los Angeles.”

She appeared in three episodes of CBS’s “The Young and the Restless” in 1997 and 2009. Freeman also led the satirical comedy “Pretty the Series” from 2010 to 2015, playing Ribina Champagne and earning recognition in the independent television space.

Beyond her screen work, Freeman remained committed to theater and storytelling. At the time of her death, she was developing a novel adaptation of her one-woman show “Poison Gun,” which drew inspiration from her family’s history. The project reflected her dedication to personal narratives and independent creative work.

Those closest to Freeman remembered her strength and grace, even in her final days. Her son Shane recalled that when asked how she was doing near the end of her life, she replied, “Can’t complain. On the other side doesn’t do you any good.”

Freeman was a devoted mother who considered her two children, Amber and Shane, her greatest pride and accomplishment. She is also survived by her mother, brothers, and sisters.

The actress carried herself with quiet dignity throughout her career, never seeking the spotlight but commanding respect through her authentic presence and powerful performances. Her work in both mainstream and independent projects demonstrated her range and commitment to the craft.

Freeman’s passing marks the loss of a versatile performer who navigated television, film, and theater with equal skill. From her early days as a Marine to her final role on “Sistas,” she approached every chapter of her life with determination and authenticity.

Her colleagues and fans remember an actress who brought depth and nuance to every role, whether in a multi-episode arc on a Tyler Perry series or a single appearance on a network drama. Freeman’s ability to connect with audiences came from a genuine place, shaped by her unique life experiences and unwavering commitment to her art.

The entertainment industry has lost a talented performer whose career impact extended far beyond her screen time. Freeman’s legacy lives on through her body of work, her children, and the countless people she touched with her grace, strength, and quiet power.
