Cruise Passenger Drowns While Snorkeling

Two separate tragedies struck the Carnival Splendor during what should have been a routine four-night sailing from Sydney, leaving one passenger dead and another lost at sea within hours of each other.

On April 17, 2026, a 67-year-old Tasmanian woman died while snorkeling near the Tangalooma Wrecks off Moreton Island in Queensland. The following morning, as the 113,300-gross-ton vessel made its way back toward Sydney, a male passenger in his 70s climbed over a railing and jumped into the ocean.

According to Carnival and Australian authorities, the two incidents are not thought to be related, though they occurred aboard the same ship carrying up to 3,012 passengers within a span of less than 24 hours.

The woman was discovered unresponsive in the water by an off-duty lifesaver who brought her ashore and administered CPR. She could not be revived. “Attempts were made to revive the woman, however, she was pronounced deceased at the scene,” a Queensland Police Service spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

Queensland police have ruled out suspicious circumstances and are preparing a coroner’s report. The woman, whose name has not been made public, was snorkeling independently and was not on a Carnival-organized shore excursion when the drowning occurred.

Witnesses at the Tangalooma Wrecks that day reported that currents were “incredibly strong,” despite the site’s reputation for calm, shallow waters. The wrecks consist of a cluster of deliberately sunken vessels that have become a popular destination for marine life viewing and attract snorkelers of all skill levels.

Moreton Island is nearly entirely covered by a national park and sits just off Brisbane. It’s a regular stop on Carnival’s short Australian itineraries, offering swimming, kayaking, snorkeling and guided marine tours. The Splendor had left Sydney on April 15 for a round-trip voyage that included two days at sea and about 10 hours at the island.

Hours after the drowning, in the early morning of April 18, the man in his 70s went overboard. A Carnival spokesperson said the passenger “apparently climbed over the safety railing and jumped overboard.” The cruise line immediately notified Australian maritime authorities, prompting what officials called an “intensive air and sea search involving multiple assets.”

Six surface vessels and five rescue helicopters combed the waters for approximately 16 hours on Saturday before the initial phase of the search was halted that evening. The broader operation lasted three days before being suspended. The man had not been found as of Thursday, and the search remained called off.

The search effort forced the Splendor to delay its return to Sydney and postpone its next scheduled sailing.

This is not the first time the Splendor has been involved in a passenger death during a water activity. In May 2023, a passenger aboard the same vessel died while swimming at Mystery Island in Vanuatu during a South Pacific cruise that also departed from Sydney.

Water-related fatalities have also occurred on other Carnival sailings. In August 2024, two American passengers — a 79-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman — drowned in separate incidents at Celebration Key, the cruise line’s private resort destination on Grand Bahama Island, as Cruise Hive has reported.

While such deaths remain statistically uncommon given the millions of passengers who cruise annually, they underscore the dangers posed by ocean swimming, snorkeling and similar water activities that cruise lines regularly offer at ports of call — especially for older passengers, who represent a substantial portion of the cruise industry’s customer base.

Carnival said in a statement to local media that it is working closely with Queensland authorities. “Carnival Cruise Line is deeply saddened by the death of a guest on Moreton Island on Friday. Our Care Team is supporting the guest’s family during this difficult time,” the cruise line said.

The company has not disclosed whether it plans to review safety protocols or operational procedures at Moreton Island. It has also declined to provide further details about the woman who died, citing respect for her family.

Authorities continue to examine the events that led to the woman’s drowning near the Tangalooma Wrecks, with a complete report to be submitted to the coroner. The investigation into both incidents remains active.

Passengers who embarked on the Splendor expecting a brief getaway during the Australian autumn instead witnessed a voyage marked by tragedy, a massive rescue operation and an unscheduled delay as authorities searched miles of ocean.
