Dr. Vin Gupta, MSNBC’s senior medical analyst, issued a stark warning about President Donald Trump’s mental health following the president’s profanity-laced Easter Sunday post threatening military action against Iran.
The doctor’s assessment came hours after the 79-year-old president posted an inflammatory message on Truth Social just after 8 a.m. on Sunday morning, threatening Iran over the Strait of Hormuz. The post, which included profanity and ended with “Praise be to Allah,” sparked widespread concern across the political spectrum about Trump’s fitness for office.
“Erratic. Can’t finish sentences. Often confused. Illogical train of thought. Word finding difficulties. Developing and worsening gradually over time. The President is exhibiting all the signs of dementia,” Gupta wrote on the social media platform X on Sunday afternoon.
Gupta has voiced concerns about the president’s cognitive decline for months, particularly following Trump’s visit to the World Economic Forum in Davos in February. The medical analyst previously noted a “trend line” that “seems like it’s getting worse.”
The president’s family history adds weight to these concerns. Trump’s father, Fred Trump Sr., was diagnosed with “mild senile dementia” in 1991. He was later hospitalized with pneumonia and died at age 93 on June 25, 1999, after battling Alzheimer’s for years.
Trump’s own niece, clinical psychologist Mary Trump, drew direct parallels in a November interview with The Daily Beast Podcast. She described seeing the same look of confusion in her uncle that she witnessed in her grandfather’s final years—the disorientation, the short-term memory lapses, the deteriorating impulse control.
In recent months, Trump has misspelled basic words, confused the names of places and people, promoted bizarre conspiracy theories such as one about Joe Biden being replaced with clones, and weirdly launched into a discussion about Sharpies in the middle of a recent Cabinet meeting.
The president’s Easter post also came after he dropped from public view for several days, sparking rumors of hospitalization that the White House was forced to deny. The White House’s Rapid Response account dismissed the speculation on Saturday, accusing “deranged liberals” of cooking up “insane conspiracy theories.”
Gupta has also expressed concerns about the president’s unusual decision to brag about “acing” multiple cognitive tests. He told MeidasTouch Network earlier this year that Trump’s word-finding difficulties, memory flubs, meandering speeches, and trouble finishing sentences are all warning signs. The behavior changes and lashing out, Gupta noted, may reflect his core personality—but it’s getting worse.
Psychologist Dr. John Gartner, a former Johns Hopkins professor who has also highlighted the president’s increasingly erratic behavior, told The Daily Beast Podcast in December that undertaking the same cognitive assessment multiple times suggests Trump’s doctors are monitoring dementia rather than screening for it.
The Easter Sunday post prompted critics across the political spectrum to declare that Trump has “gone insane” and gotten “completely, utterly unhinged.”
Lawmakers and former Trump officials called on Vice President JD Vance and the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment. Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ) wrote on X that the president is “a deranged lunatic, and a national security threat to our country and the rest of the world.” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) said he would spend Easter “calling constitutional lawyers about the 25th Amendment” if he were in Trump’s Cabinet.
Former Trump staffer Miles Taylor declared it “time for the 25th,” citing the president’s threats of war crimes. Anthony Scaramucci invoked the Founders, arguing they designed the Constitution precisely to remove “a mad man who has the executive office.”
Even former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), once a fierce Trump ally who resigned from Congress in January after a bitter public feud with the president, implored those around him to “intervene in Trump’s madness.” She wrote bluntly: “I know all of you and him and he has gone insane, and all of you are complicit.”
