Geraldo Rivera Issues Warning About Trump

A sharp political warning from veteran broadcaster Geraldo Rivera suggests President Trump could lead Republicans into a catastrophic defeat in the 2026 midterms unless the Iran conflict ends soon and gas prices drop.

The NewsNation correspondent, speaking on “The Daily Take” with host Connell McShane on April 15, 2026, predicted that continued warfare and elevated fuel costs would trigger what he called a “revolution” against the GOP at the ballot box.

The situation has deteriorated significantly since Rivera’s warning. Iran reversed course on April 18 and re-closed the Strait of Hormuz, demanding the United States lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports before permitting commercial shipping to resume. Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump said Iran had gotten “a little cute” and warned that if no deal is reached before the ceasefire expires, “we’ll have to start dropping bombs again.”

Rivera’s concern centers on economic pain inflicted on American consumers by Trump’s blockade strategy in the Strait of Hormuz. The tactic aims to economically cripple Iran but has hammered voters at the pump, creating a politically explosive combination as the ceasefire’s April 21 expiration approaches.

“I think if the war persists, and if the price of gas stays where it is or goes higher, there will be a stampede in the midterm elections,” Rivera told host Connell McShane. “I think the cost politically to the president will be profound. I think Republicans will be reeling from a revolution.”

Public sentiment supports Rivera’s grim forecast. An Ipsos poll presented during the segment asked Americans to complete the statement “Considering the cost and benefits, the Iran War has been…,” revealing only 24% believe military action has been worth the costs, while 51% say it has not.

Trump’s political standing shows signs of erosion, particularly among his core supporters. A CNN survey found that the share of Republicans who strongly approve of Trump’s job performance dropped from 52% in January to 43% by April, while his economic approval rating among Republicans fell 14 points over the same period.

Rivera highlighted a fundamental contradiction between Trump’s campaign rhetoric and current policy. The veteran journalist emphasized that Trump won the election in part by pledging “no more forever wars” to his MAGA base—a commitment now at odds with the current situation in Iran.

The broadcaster’s criticism marks a dramatic shift from just eight days earlier. During an April 7 appearance on “TMZ Live,” Rivera discussed Trump’s Iran strategy with a more supportive tone, calling Trump’s threat to end Iran’s civilization “exaggerated” and expressing confidence that the Department of War would never authorize strikes on civilian targets. He also dismissed concerns that Trump would deploy nuclear weapons.

His latest comments came as the U.S. and Israel continued waging war against Iran, with Trump having set an 8 p.m. ceasefire deadline that included threats to bomb power plants and other critical infrastructure. While a two-week ceasefire was ultimately announced, the economic damage from disrupted oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz continues to ripple through global markets.

McShane acknowledged that while Trump’s blockade in the Strait of Hormuz might force Iran to accept presidential terms through economic pressure, American patience appears to be wearing thin.

The longtime broadcaster, who appeared alongside Trump on “Celebrity Apprentice,” seems convinced that the president’s typical bombastic style will not overcome voter frustration if economic conditions don’t improve quickly. Rivera’s assessment suggests that the political window for Trump to achieve victory in Iran and bring down gas prices may be rapidly closing.

With the Strait once again shuttered, gas prices showing no sign of relief, and peace talks stalled, the 2026 midterms loom as a potential referendum on Trump’s Iran policy and its devastating domestic economic consequences. The warning carries particular weight given Rivera’s history as a Trump ally and his understanding of the MAGA base’s priorities. His suggestion that Republicans could face a “revolution” at the ballot box represents one of the most pessimistic forecasts yet from someone within Trump’s extended political orbit.
