The piece, which went live on CNN’s platform, triggered immediate panic among fans. No news of Fox’s death had been reported, no statement had come from his family, and no word had been issued by his representatives. Nevertheless, the memorial-style content was sufficient to spark a social media uproar, with countless fans voicing sorrow, bewilderment, and fury about what they were witnessing.

CNN subsequently removed the post, though not before harm had been inflicted. TMZ broke the news that Fox was alive and in good health, speaking with his representative directly to clarify the situation.

“Michael is doing great,” his rep told TMZ. “He was at PaleyFest yesterday. He was on stage and was giving interviews.”

In fact, Fox had made an unexpected appearance just the day before at PaleyFest LA, attending the wrap party for the third season of the Apple TV+ comedy series “Shrinking,” where he has a guest role. The gathering occurred at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and featured a special screening and panel conversation with co-creator and star Jason Segel, alongside cast members Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, and Ted McGinley, among others.

CNN later issued a statement, saying: “The package was published in error; we have removed it from our platforms and send our apologies to Michael J. Fox and his family.”

Fox responded to the confusion on Threads with characteristic humor. “How do you react when you turn on the TV and CNN is reporting your death?” he wrote, before offering a satirical multiple-choice list of reactions. He concluded: “I thought the world was ending, but apparently it’s just me and I’m ok.”

Fox, in the meantime, seemed in high spirits at PaleyFest, where his participation in “Shrinking” has been characterized by the show’s creators as intensely personal.
