Rapper Died at 23: Cause of Death Revealed

James Dear, the 23-year-old rapper known as Luci4, died from an accidental fentanyl overdose, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has determined. The ruling, first reported by TMZ on April 21, 2026, closes the book on weeks of speculation that followed the young artist’s February death — speculation stoked, in part, by his own grandparents.

Dear was found dead at a friend’s house in Los Angeles on the morning of February 22, 2026. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical call at the residence at 11:40 a.m., but when crews arrived, he was already dead. Police were notified shortly after.

In the days that followed, Dear’s grandparents raised suspicions of foul play after authorities discovered the artist’s empty wallet at the friend’s home — a detail that fueled outside theories and kept fans waiting for the toxicology report. That report now points to the same synthetic opioid that has hollowed out a generation of young musicians.

Before he was Luci4, James Dear was a teenage beatmaker building a reputation inside SpaceGhostPurrp’s collective BMB Deathrow. He worked behind the boards as a producer, absorbing the blown-out textures of cloud rap and the menace of Southern trap — two sounds he would later fuse into something of his own.

That fusion became Sigilkore, an internet microgenre blending trap, cloud rap and occult imagery into a woozy, lo-fi sound. Dear, who also recorded under the name Axxturel, became one of its most visible champions. When he went solo, he didn’t just join the scene — he helped define its borders.

His breakthrough arrived on TikTok. In 2021, tracks like “Ave Domina Lilith” began circulating across the platform, drawing a cult audience that followed him into his VampMania album series. The project’s momentum landed him a deal with Atlantic Records, a rare mainstream co-sign for an artist rooted in such a niche corner of the internet.

Then came “BodyPartz.”

The track exploded across social media, moving beyond Sigilkore devotees and onto mainstream playlists. It became his signature song, and in January 2024 the Recording Industry Association of America certified it gold — a milestone that reframed Luci4’s career from underground curiosity to crossover contender.

Dear released his album “VampMania 3” in late 2024 and dropped a steady stream of singles into early 2026, extending the series that had carried him into the majors. Fans and fellow artists described a musician who was still ascending when he died, with plenty of runway in front of him.

Among the loudest voices in mourning has been Kayla G, his manager, who announced Dear’s death in a TikTok post on February 22.

“He was truly a leader, a king and a musician and a genius. There’s nobody like him and there will never be. We all loved him dearly. Rest easy,” she wrote.

In a follow-up Instagram Story, she reflected on her role in his career. “The best decision I ever made was to manage Luci4,” she wrote. “We were inseparable. And we will forever be bonded together. I’ll see you soon king.”

Her posts echoed a sentiment shared across the Sigilkore community in the weeks since February — that Luci4 wasn’t simply participating in a sound, he was shaping it. For a genre born on TikTok and message boards, the loss of one of its architects lands heavier than a typical industry death.

Fentanyl’s grip on hip-hop is, by now, a grim through-line connecting some of the genre’s most promising young voices. The drug — often mixed into counterfeit pills or other substances without the user’s knowledge — has killed a long list of rappers in their teens and 20s, and Dear now joins that roster.

The medical examiner’s finding offers his family a measure of clarity, if not comfort. The foul-play concerns that followed the discovery of his empty wallet have been overtaken by a more familiar explanation, one that has shadowed the music industry for years.

Luci4 was 23. He leaves behind a small but influential catalog, a genre he helped invent, and a gold plaque for the song that was supposed to be his beginning, not his epitaph.
